LUDHIANA: The satirical cartoons in French magazine Charlie Hebdo drew the flak from Shahi Imam of Punjab also.

Alleging that France hurt the sentiments of Muslim community through "defamatory" cartoons published in satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, Shahi Imam Maulana Habib-ur-Rehman Saani Ludhianvi on Friday issued a fatwa, asking Muslims across the world not to buy France-made products. He said journalists of Charlie Hebdo committed the biggest sin by drawing the "defamatory" cartoons of Prophet Muhammad, which cannot be tolerated by any Muslim.

Masked terrorists had stormed the Paris office of the magazine on January 7, killing 12 people.

Saying that the act of Charlie Hebdo journalists deserved a reaction, he asserted that he was against any form of terrorism. Addressing a Friday gathering at Shahi Mosque here, he said for long the magazine was publishing defamatory cartoons of Prophet as a result of which there was anger among the Muslims across the world.

"We want to make it clear to the goons in Europe that we will not tolerate any disrespect of our Prophet. So I issue a fatwa against France and ask Muslims across the world to boycott French products and also not to fly by Air France," said Shahi Imam.

He also appealed to Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to ask Islamic countries to close down their embassies in France as was done by Turkey.

Adding that no one should be allowed to defame Islam, he said those advocating freedom of expression in Europe should come to India. "Though there is freedom of expression here, no one is allowed to hurt the religious sentiments of any community," he said.
