I've never heard of this even though I've been to Gujarat once. Share more of such weird/amazing things you find out about different places/practices in India.

P.S. I could write a whole book about my surprising moments for the first time in south India.

This is probably not universal, but definitely a common practice for small businesses in Gujarat. I can recall a daily routine/ritual of several small business owners when they open the shop: take off their shoes/chappal outside, jhadu lagao, light an agarbatti and a small "good morning" pooja before attending the first customer. Of course, at this time, they'd put their shoes/chappal back on.

Is this not followed anywhere else outside of Gujarat?

I don't remember observing this at public offices or large businesses.
