Common phrases .. random musings

Have you ever heard a phrase or a simile or an idiom or even a nursery rhyme and thought .. "I wonder how they came up with that"?

Here are some random thoughts about some of these that bug me .. or at least get me thinking. Too much time on my hands, I guess. Thought I'd share. Feel free to add ....

More than one way to skin a cat
Of all the examples they could have chosen from the world of problem solving ... that's the one they come up with??? I mean, really! Is that such a big issue for somebody .."How do I skin this dadgum cat?"

Hmmm ... talking of cats ....

Curiosity killed the cat
Swing a dead cat
Cat has nine lives
There has got to be a seriously sick fuck who spends all his time dreaming of killing cats to come up with these, right?

Robbing Peter to pay Paul
For the love of Mike!
By George!
Who the fuck are all these people??

Hot as hell. Cold as hell.
Slow as hell. Fast as hell.
Soft as hell. Hard as hell.
What the hell?

What goes around, comes around.
Really? Its like saying .. "these stairs go up .. but they also come down". Duhh!!

Greatest thing since sliced bread
Once again .. of all the life altering inventions in the history of mankind ... you picked sliced bread as a watershed moment?? Not greatest thing since the automobile, or greatest thing since penicillin or even greatest thing since television. Sliced bread! Oh .. Mongo dont have to rip hunks of bread from the loaf any more .. Mongo happy.

Even nursery rhymes have me puzzled ....

Twinkle twinkle little star
How I wonder what you are
Its a fucking star!! You said so yourself in the first fucking line! Tera naam kya hai, Basanti?

Baa Baa black sheep, have you any wool
Yes sir, Yes sir, three bags full.
Ok .. what the heck is the deal with the Baa Baa?? You start with supposed sheep talk and then suddenly switch to English. Its apparent from the reply that the sheep knows English pretty well, too, you patronizing piece of shit. Do you go up to a Chinese man and go "Chin chin choo chong ding long, excuse me sir do you have the time?"

Mary had a little lamb
Oh yeah ... call the Guinness book as well as all the local farmers. Tell them to lock up their sheep - some of them are getting horny. And speak pretty good English too, as we just found out. Ahhhh .. that explains the phrase "Black Sheep". Be careful ladies ...

There are so many more .. of course, when one tries to write them down .. they run and hide from memory. Oh well .. will add more as they come back.

There is a muhawara in hindi : Naak ka baal hona which means Bahut pyara hona.
Seriously!! You have to appreciate the sense of humour of the person who came up with this.
Then of course Rickey Gervais dissected Jack and Jill and Humpty Dumpty... It is so funny.. lemme search for the vid..

Re: Common phrases .. random musings

I am always puzzled by the nursery rhyme
Hey Diddle Diddle, the cat and the fiddle
The cow jumped over the moon
The little dog laughed to see such fun
And the dish ran away with the spoon

I mean, seriously, who comes up with shit like this. You have to be really high on something to even imagine a cow jumping over a moon and connecting it to a dish running away with a spoon.

And since when cataract has been so dear to someone?
Same goes for hindi version - aankh ka tara

Nau Do Gyarah hona
- What is so surprising about this - if you add Nine and Two ,it will be Eleven no matter how you calculate.

the gyarah (11) in this kahawat pertains to running away.

For Example, Question: "Bhai woh ladka yahan khada tha, kahan gaya?"

Answer:"Woh 11 number ki bus se chala gaya"

11 (meaning two feet)

Buses were not there in time of Ram- Raavan right?
This idiom's mention is there in Ramayana - Hanuman ko dekhar ke saare rakshas nau do gyarah ho gaye.
