Question Indian Air Force

Honest question.

Most of the eastern block (ex) countries who had Mig21 have disposed them off. We have even bought some of these retired planes and supposedly reconditioned them. Now

the reason the Mig 21 was scrapped was that they are past their era. Why do still have them despite such a poor record and the last buy was from Romania just last year. Whats going on here?

With the number of crashes in training we will destroy our air force ourselves.

MiG-21 Fact File:

Total Number of MiGs that served in the IAF: approx 910
Highest Number of Squadrons of MiG-21s : 20 in the 1990s
Number of years in Service: 40 (1963-Tilldate)
Number of MiG-21s lost in Air to Air Combat : 1
Number of Kills claimed by MiG-21s : 6
Estimated number of hours flown by MiG-21s till date: 1,500,000
Number of MiG-21s lost in mishaps: 316 (as on Aug 2003)

The thing is that they are gradually being phased out. We have over 300 Mig 21's, you just cant one day say that you wont use them anymore. The reason that we are going in for 125 Mirage 2000-5's and another 125 Su-30MKI is a step in the right direction. Give it some time.

I share your concerns Jasbir. Most airplan acquisitions that our MOD procures are like 3-4 ready to fly sqadrons and the rest to be built by HAL. And we all know the speed at which HAL works. Lets hope HAL proves us wrong this time.
