Delhi Civic Polls [Municipal Corporation of Delhi] Results

this was the 1st election post tri-furcation of the MCD into three municipal corporations. supposedly a congress plan to increase its chances of victory, the tri-furcation did not work.
UP divide nahi kiya, that did not work. MCD divide kiya, that too did not work.

BJP sweeps Delhi civic polls, Congress downplays defeat

NEW DELHI: BJP on Tuesday appeared set to capture the three newly-created municipal corporations in the capital, one with help from others, as Congress fell way behind the saffron party in the civic body polls.

While it was poised to win North and East Corporations comfortably, the BJP looks to be emerging as the single largest party in the South and is confident of getting the support of independents to cross the midway mark.

Of the 206 results declared by State Election Commission out of 272 wards in all three corporations, BJP has bagged 106 while Congress has won 60 seats.

BSP has bagged 14 seats, RLD three, NCP and SP two each and JD(U) and INLD one each while 17 Independents have also won.

In South Delhi Corporation which has a total of 104 wards, BJP has won or is leading in as many as 43 out of the 104 wards while Congress was ahead in 30 seats. Interestingly, others are leading in 26 seats.

In North Delhi Corporation, which has 104 seats, BJP is ahead in 61 seats while Congress is leading in 16 seats. Others are leading in four wards.

In East Delhi Corporation having 64 seats, BJP is leading in 34 seats while Congress is ahead in 26 seats.

Stakes are high for both the national parties in the municipal polls, considered as a semi-final ahead of the Assembly elections next year.

In the 2007 polls to the undivided Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), BJP had bagged 36.17 per cent of the around 42.35 lakh votes polled while Congress got 29.17 per cent. BSP's vote share was 9.87 per cent.

BJP has 164 councillors in the undivided MCD against Congress' 67 and BSP's 17. Congress sought to downplay the results with party spokesperson Rashid Alvi saying that MCD polls should be seen only as civic polls. BJP's M Venkaiah Naidu said BJP's good governance in MCD and Congress' corruption resulted in the good show of his party.

We see MCD polls as civic polls, nothing else: Congress

New Delhi, Apr 17 (PTI) Congress today sought to downplay the surge of BJP in the Delhi municipal elections saying it should be seen only as civic polls, while the saffron party said corruption and price rise helped them.

"Last time BJP had won the MCD polls but Congress came to power in Assembly. Congress even went on to win all the seven Parliament seats. MCD polls should be seen only as MCD polls," Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi said.

BJP National Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu, however, said corruption and price rise were the main reasons for Congress' rout and his party's victory.

"It is a BJP win. Good governance of BJP in MCD polls, corruption by Congress and price rise are the three main issues for the rout of Congress party," Naidu said.

Re: Delhi Civic Polls [Municipal Corporation of Delhi] Results

The same public which votes one party in state assembly elections, votes for a different party in municipal elections.

It has happened in Mumbai where Sena-BJP rule BMC. And in Delhi too. And I think its a repeat phenomenon in both places. These are probably two of the richest municipal corporations of the country. BMC's budget is more than many states of the country.

State and Union[LS] elections are a different ballgame. This dual behavior there is understandable in a federal structure. But why within the same state?

What are your thots on this? Are voters really so smart? or are they fools? or is there any other angle to it?

I don't know. May be there is some ultimate wisdom with the voters. Public can also be very fickle. So it cuts both ways. But it's very good to throw these people out periodically — they have a tendency to start abusing power early in their terms, and this is a way to maintain some semblance of checks and balances.

Manmohan ji's govt has been lurching from scam to scam. But the BJP is a house divided. I am not sure how much they can take advantage in the next LS elections. Advani ji refuses to let go. Looks like he wants to cling on to power forever, like a typical Bharatiya netaji.

For the first time in history, delhi voted upto sixty percent, and bhaiyya dominated east performed the best

High voter turn out also means that finally youth has taken up to voting, and all congrats to state election commission

yes thats true. but in this case, the public is re-electing the incumbent. however, different parties in different elections within the state.

sometimes i wonder whether democracy truly exists in India. and then sometimes, i think, it does to a very great extent. sometimes i also think why i think what i think.
