Gita - Not an Extremist book!

Gita could be banned in Russia

c
Hare Krishna adherents protest in Calcutta

Continue reading the main story Indian Foreign Minister SM Krishna has described as "absurd" a complaint in Russia that the Hindu holy book Bhagvad Gita is an extremist religious text.
Indian MPs have expressed outrage at a court case in Russia that could see the Hindu holy book banned there.
State prosecutors in Tomsk, in Siberia, recently put Bhagvad Gita say the text sows social discord and want its distribution banned.
Russian embassy officials in Delhi said they had great regard for the text.
But SM Krishna told parliament that the complaint was filed by "ignorant people" - the holy book had also been put on a list that includes Hitler's Mein Kampf.
Russia recognises freedom of religion among its four main faiths, Orthodox Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and Judaism.
'Protect Hindu rights'
"The government has taken up the issue with the Russian government and Indian embassy officials are in touch with the officials of the International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON)," Mr Krishna said.

Re: Gita - An Extremist book?

I tried to do a bit of googling about this. This is what I understood to be happening: it's a clash, in this particular town/locality, between Orthodox Christians (the dominant religion in Russia) and Hindus (recent Russian converts who follow ISKCON). The Orthodox Christians of that town/locality persuaded/influenced the authorities to file the court case. Seems the Orthodox Christians got pissed off because Hindus wanted to set up an ashram/commune in that locality, and also may be because Hindus distribute the Gita in that area. Some passages in this Gita (Russian version) have not apparently pleased some of the Orthodox Christians. Looks like, in that town/locality, Orthodox Christians are trying to intimidate Hindus.

Also, Russia is a society where the rule of law is weak, so that fact has to be considered.

Please excuse any errors.

What Russian Ambassador has to SAY

Russian ambassador Alexander M Kadakin expressed sadness over the development, saying it is “inadmissible” that a holy scripture is taken to court.
“It is strange that such events are unfolding in the beautiful university city in Siberia, as Tomsk which is famous for its secularism and religious tolerance,” Kadakin said in a statement here.

Tremendous misinformation campaign by US agents in Russia. Racist Americans want to create an impression that Hinduism is Islam type of religion whose followers are on a conversion mission. The local payees are now hiding the notion that Hinduism is way of life and unlike Islam thousands of gods and goddesses are worshipped. They are hiding how over the centuries Bharat has embraced various religions and absorbed invaders. The idea of getting Gita is to equate it with the Dutch minister’s demand to ban Koran. All this propaganda will affect Indo-Russian political and people-to-people relationship.

Americans are doing this because an anarchic war (incited by US) is on the offing. A staggering number of nations (Pakistan, China, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka etc.) and internal terrorists (like Naxalites) are planning to attack India.

Americans don’t want Russians to come to rescue of Indians.

Re: Gita - An Extremist book?

Since the fall of atheist Soviet Union, christian orthodoxy is on rise in Russia, Russians are orthodox christian, Geeta is pagan/infidel text whose basics are anti-christ, Russian law and order is as good as India's but court order is unacceptable

Shuthi tai, your theory appears most suitable, pity IB is unable to hire such an intellectual

Re: Gita - An Extremist book?

It seems that, behind all the legal maneuvering, the underlying cause of the tension is that the local Orthodox Christians in that locality feel that ISKCON is luring Russians away from their traditions and converting them to some strange religion ... Amazing that this was a godless communist country until a few years back.

A picture of the ISKCON people there:
