they are mysteries, follow this detective John Rebus. veer on the darker side but more human than any other detectives I have read.

Re: What book are you all reading?
Sem sem... about halfway through. Will take another week or two to finish. Good pace... through they are all built on a stenciled layout.
Recently read 'Harry's Trees'... a delightful book, very well written. The author has a knack of expressing emotions through words. Do read it if you get a chance.

Re: What book are you all reading?
I just finished " The Hound of Baskervilles" . My dad always wanted me to read that but could never go past 3 pages due to ancient style of writing. Finally got an audio book and loved listening to it.
BTW any suggestion for cheap audio book app ?

Re: What book are you all reading?
Nice .. i’ve read it many times having been a fan of Sherlock Homes series during teenage years. I wish I could forget all the stories, so I could enjoy it all over again.

Re: What book are you all reading?
Not sure if it would work for you, but try ‘overdrive’. It connects to your local library and you could borrow an audiobook.
I used it for ‘crucial conversations’ in Midwest.

I got the complete works of Sherlock Holmes - narrated by Stephen Fry. over 28 hours of audio-book. I also use overdrive to borrow books from my library - but more ebooks than audio books.

Also, mine lets me borrow audio books for 2 weeks with a chance of renewal 3 times. So you will have plenty of time to listen to books if you want to just borrow an audio book. |

Re: What book are you all reading?
Same hear. I loved all the stories. Recently on Netflix Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock was aird. Pretty impressive, especially the sound track. Though, nothing comes close to the books.

Re: What book are you all reading?
Also, with Overdrive if you turn the wifi off (download the audio books on old phone) then you can listen to the book even after the due date. Once you are done with the book, just turn the wifi back on and book will go away from you device.

Re: What book are you all reading?
What is everyone reading lately? I had to share something. There is this famous album, Boney M by a German composer. One of my dad's favourite songs was/is ra ra Rasputin, lover of the Russian Queen from that album. I was listening to the song because I was missing my dad and then realised that I barely knew about Rasputin other than the fact that he was a lover to the Russian Queen. This was 3 months ago.
I went through the whole Russian History, ending at the execution of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia along with his entire family. Bloody murder...killed his wife and 5 young children along with the tsar. I also ended up reading a LOT on First World War and why King George couldnt let Nicholas II into Britain, even though Russia and Britain were allies in the war. Books read based on this in the last 3 months. The Romanov Sisters The Last Tsar Rasputin, the untold story Life and Tragedy of Alexandra Feodorovna Watched innumerable videos in youtube. I must say, while Rasputin did have a considerable influence in Russia during early 1900's, he wasnt the Empresses' lover. She and Nicholas were deeply devoted to each other, through the First World War. Rasputin gained the Imperial family's favour because they believed that Rasputin could help ease their only male-child, the future Tsar of Russia, Alexie who suffers from Haemophilia. It wasnt a public knowledge back then as they didnt want Russia to treat the future Tsar as an invalid. Disastrous state decisions were made but yet, none of their children needed to die. I wish there is someone else interested in these stories...I am saddened at the whole Romanov dynasty and the way it ended. |

Re: What book are you all reading?
^^ Read a couple of books where Rasputin appeared as a fictional character... loosely built around the real one. In at least one of the books, he had mystical and magical characteristics and was used by some political leaders to bring down the king. And one of them hinted the story about the queen. But do not remember much details now.
And Boney M is not just an album but a group... with a lot of hits. This group was quite popular in India in the 80s and 90s... but when I arrived in US, nobody knew about them.

The way I am understanding rasputin is different after I read so many books. He was power hungry peasant from Siberia. He didnt crave money, actually he gave away most of his money (gifts he received) to others in need. He liked to showoff his influence over the Tsar and the Empress. He wanted power. He is a politician. Beyond that, he didnt really across as a brute. Yes, he did have a drinking problem and yes, he did sleep around and yes, he did have an influence over the State. BUT he is a politician. He was loyal to the Crown. Tsar Nicholas is too mild to even rule a province, let alone a vast country like Russia. You are right about Boney M. A lot of people dont know that group at all. Its ironic that my favourite song now infuriates me. |
