Same as Christianity and Judaism. Jesus was born a Jew. And Buddha was born a Hindu.

Re: How is buddhism similar to hinduism?

Hinduism is in fact not a religion, like others religions been mentioned above. No one started, promoted and propogated it as any messenger.

It's just a way of life.

In olden times, near the Sindhu/Indu river ( now in Pakistan ) the culture and civilization started and people living near-by were called Indus/Hindus.

You won't find any person's name,.. say Ram, Krishna, Dushyant , Shravan, Prahlad, Bhagirath, or Harishchandra, under the narration that HE established and started the Hindu religion.

Read more interesting on it, here.

Both actually advocate a kind of Atheism (and both originated in India/Nepal).

Buddhism was also vegetarian, but the Buddhists now are far from vegetarian (like in Tibet, Japan, etc.).

Religions born from Hinduism do not cause religious mayhem. All of them are similar in that sense.

The organized religions were created for the purpose of creating mayhem.

Food habits is just one part. The teachings, values and principles of both the religion are more or less the same.

Lord Buddha and all the 24 Tirthankars of Jainism were born to kings and they all had given up everything in search of knowledge.

There are some who wrongly believe that both the religions have originated around the same time but Jainism is pretty old compared to Buddhism.

The 24th Tirthankar- Lord Mahavir and Lord Buddha had been in around the same period. But there had been 23 more Tirthankars prior to Lord Mahavir, probably proving that Jainism might have been there for a few thousands of years before Buddhisim started flourishing.
