How to quit an online forum---silently or by posting about it ??

The downside about posting that you are going to quit is that it becomes a topic of discussion for members of the forum , and inevitably snide remarks are passed on the quitting individual by other members of the forum . Secondly , the quitting member is accused of attention seeking behaviour .

But quitting silently means that you are not committing to quit , and may be attracted to posting again on the forum on some topic you find interesting . Posting that you are going to quit means that you are committing to quit and once committed , you find it difficult to come back as the discussion on the topic and the snide remarks have been made---this making the quitting a big issue , which ensures that the quitting ID does not come back .

So I feel that the quitter must post about the quitting in order to ensure that the quitting is for real .

It's like quitting smoking .. Either you do it by reducing slowly (never works) .. Or you go cold turkey (only way to quit permanently).

I prefer silent option. You go back when you want to otherwise don't.
Don't overthink it.

Re: How to quit an online forum---silently or by posting about it ??

But the question is... why do you want to quit forum If you do not like the forum... then why did you join in the first place? Now that you joined, why give up and quit Stay on, reduce your posts and see if any topic of interest comes up and then post slowly and quietly... stay on.

Did my mention about you in the other post hurt you ?
That was just to bring to your notice(rudely) that they are using your name everywhere and I did not mean anything else.

Announcing that one is quitting implies he / she is expecting people to say "please don't go".

Re: How to quit an online forum---silently or by posting about it ??

Why does someone need to inform others before quitting? If they think they are valuable, people are going to miss them or forum is not going to survive without them. The problem with virtual forum world is, no one gives shit about no one, this is even more prominent when Indian janata is involved. They are dime a dozen everywhere and nobody gives a shit whether you come or go. The life goes on.

Most of the indian folks are very sentimental and drama kings and queens. Do whatever floats the boat, because at the end of the day, it doesn't matter a bit either way.

If a tree falls and nobody is there to hear it, did it really fall? If a member quits, but doesn't tell anyone, did he really quit?

My suggestion is that when a member resigns, mods should block the id after 2 weeks. That way, commitment is forced upon the member after announcing quittage. As you may know, if you don't have the bamboo, you can't play flute.

There are metallic flutes as well, and they sound pretty good as well.

As they say, why play gourd-like flute instrument in front of buffalo?
