IMHO this is a law that is ripe for abuse... while the intent maybe to weed out illegal immigrants.. In a depressed economy with an unhappy white population - it could produce some really bad results and unwanted hassles for desis..
If you are legal only then you get a driving license. A DMV issued driver's license or a state ID (looks just like a license) is proof enough.

You need a SSN to get a driver license/state id. So if you are here illegaly you wont have a driver license.

So even for a brown ass citizen, a driver's license should be good enough.

The point is would like to get pulled over because of the color of your skin. I have struggled to get the legal status, I don't have to get troubled by cops every time he suspects me. It is like Sikhs living in Taliban Afganistant who were made to wear a badge to prove they are not muslims.

If AZ wanted to stop illegal arrest all the people who are hiring these pepople. If there is no demand for such labors we will not have this problem.

Re: Arizona introduces tough immigration laws - What is your take?

Foresight is a western culture alien to us Indians. We construct highways and bridges which were needed 30 years ago, we started to construct 20 years ago to meet the needs of 10 years ago.

People in the west think and plan for the future and they prepare decades ahead. Illegal aliens or letting hundreds of thousands of students in to learn cooking and grooming skills could just be a ploy to meet future needs for cheap labor. Illegal aliens do provide necessary services locals are no longer willing to. Take Maharashtra as an example ... outsiders (even if not welcome) are needed as a source of cheap labor because traditional source (local Mahrathas) are getting better education and are no longer willing to provide cheap labor.

Just hope it does not end up like Malaysia.

There the Pandus ask for you Visa then Crib that your Passport looks fake and will ask for 100 ringits or so.

Re: Arizona introduces tough immigration laws - What is your take?

i wont be surprised to know if there is a republican governer in Az.But as babu and chando say, they should send notices to people who employ illegal immigrants for cheap labour.Similiarly there should be on the spot deportation ,if an illegal immigrant is found and people should report one to the authorities if they know.

the border patrol is useless. My cousin from san diego had once gone to mexico for a trip and while she was coming back she saw lot of people bringing medicines in their tooth brush puch and handing 50$ bills to those guys. She was watching this intently.and one of the homeland security guy came over to her and started telling her how brigh his kid was and had a chance to make into ivy league college. He was trying to justify her why they are accepting money for it.

Re: Arizona introduces tough immigration laws - What is your take?

There needs to be two way enforcement.

Raid places like Wal Mart, McDonalds, etc and ask for employment records.

When a H1B or a Green Card Holder or a US Citizen joins a tech company in Silicon Valley, its standard practice to ask for the candidate to fill out a I-9 form. This proves that you have valid authorization to work in the USA.

This form is issued by the USCIS. Raid all establishments and ask for these forms.

And offcourse ask anyone to prove they are here legally. A driver license or a passport with valid visa should suffice.

And to make this enforcement more effective, there should be a database which the police can look up which has your visa or status information. They already do that for driving license and driving record when they pull you up for a moving violation. So why not for visa status?

THE big supermarket chain hires illegals but not directly. When it grants contracts to companies for providing services to its stores, the contract amounts are so less that one has to hire illegals to service the contract and be left with some profit. This way the super market does not get into legal tangles and if anyone gets into legal trouble its the hapless small business that survives by providing service to this supermarket.
