Re: CFL Lit LCD TVs

A friend of mine found a 52" Samsung CFL on a street... picked it up and took it home. The TV was constantly resetting itself on boot up... so he went to the market and bought a bunch of caps and replaced them all. And it worked like a charm. Total cost for entire TV: 20 bucks.

Why would you want to buy a CFL TV? The whole idea for a LED backlight was to get rid of CFL... so why you would want to buy

Re: CFL Lit LCD TVs

Well, Sane Pai, i thought it would be half the rate of an LED backlit TV.

My 46" Sony LED has gone Kaput and i am looking at low cost alternatives.

Re: CFL Lit LCD TVs

There are low-cost LED alternates... just don't go for the high-end. There are Samsung 6-series that sell pretty cheap. And of course, there are Vizios, etc.

Re: CFL Lit LCD TVs

Just say what your budget is... just saw a LED 55" for less than 1000 bucks at Dell. And there are plasmas of similar size for about 600. The plasmas of today are way better than the plasmas of 2005... and more efficient than CFLs of 2005.

Thanks Sane Pai. You will get a rep for this 'Once i have spread it around'
i wanted to go for somethign about 500 (The estimated actual cash value of my spoilt TV), but my better half would not settle for anything less than 50". i have now narrowed on a Samsung 55" SMart TV which is about 800. Hopefully buying it today (Akshaya Tritiya) will keep it lasting longer.

Don't forget to screw it down to the tv stand, I repent not doing it with my tv before my toddler flipped it.

Re: CFL Lit LCD TVs

Thanks all for the inputs. I brought home a samsung un55fh6200 last friday.
It is going great. I now start warning my kid whenever i see him a foot away from this TV.
It has been good. on Smart TV, i can now watch Dish world without Roku. It has some other Desi (rather southie) streaming services like channellive and yupp tv.

One big thing it does not have is youtube. it does have dailymotion, but that is a poor substitute.

Personally after spending over 2years with Plasma and have seen LCD's with lots of my friends, i prefer Plasma

cons:
Weight
Higher power consumption
And may be in 10 years time, i will have to give up hope on any support
Require a Dark room to see the TV in all its glory

Pro's
The most vivid colors, better than backlit LED TV's and slightly below OLED TV's.
Cheap

Re: CFL Lit LCD TVs

Few days back, we got a 42" LG LED TV. For me, the good old CRT TV served the purpose, but .. nevermind.

Any useful tips to ensure its hassle-free long life (other than not spitting water on it ) are welcome.
