News or Bubble

This is the opposite for Shakti Pai's thread on 'news that was not'. This is on non issues that grab the headlines.

This one is on 'Net Neutrality'. And it emerges that India has overtaken US as the country where it is discussed most. And Cong leaders have it all over their twitter pages.

But do many discussing it understand what it is? In US, it is because the companies which provide the net also provide TV services and are trying to restrict Netflix, etc.

But do any such conflicts exist in India. I think only airtel may have both net services and TV transmission. And is there any selective blocking. And lastly, how much of streaming TV is there right now.

Here is one on MSM today -

Switching sides to support ‘net neutrality‘, e-commerce major Flipkart today decided to “walk away” from its proposed tie-up with Airtel that has been at the centre of a raging debate over a need to maintain equal Internet access for all.
“We will be walking away from the ongoing discussions with Airtel for their platform Airtel Zero,” Flipkart said.
Net neutrality implies equal treatment to all Internet traffic and any priority given to an application or company on payment basis is seen as violating the concept.
Launched last week, Airtel Zero is an open-marketing platform that allows customers to access certain mobile applications for free with charges being borne by app makers.

Of course it is. And it is hogging the front page and will soon hog the headlines. Yupp TV has taken off NDTV now and i am not bothering to follow it, but i would not be surprised if there is a Barkha Dutt show on it.

what? I will have to check today evening. Not that I watch a whole lot of NDTV or Yupp anyway. I would prefer India TV (Rajat Sharma waala) .. good Hindi news channel with hardly any BS, also doesn't hold meaningless TV debates.

Re: News or Bubble

RE: Net neutrality problem :

^^ IMO,....It's basically for India and few other nations, for the time-being at present,.. where every private sellers sell their ISP services with their own freedom,.. and blocks some sites and some not,..... allow some porn/cookies/ad makers/ trackers/hackers /,.... allow some cookies to track you, and slow down some sites intentionally ( say Amazon if they are not patched up with them ) to allow them less business,.... and on the other hand, faster opening some sites say,. flip-karts, once they have commission established with them, to make it open fast,..also political factors - say if NDTV speaks ill of AAP, then slow them down so less ppl will be able to surf it fast,.. etc..

--

But besides that,.. think it this way,...

Assume that the electricity and phone service is coming at various and diff speed to all,....

Say, for some one it takes 3 hours to cook rice 'coz their elec. is coming at a slower rate,..

Say,.. some guys hear your sound in broken sentences in phone and it takes 20 minutes to hear at the other hand , what you speak,..
and so on,..

Say, some cable services buffer and it will take 6 hours to watch their movie on your flat screen,... etc.

How difficult it would be to use the electricity and sound waves signals for all on the globe, if it was like that !!

^^ You got the point. Same here. We are all suffering due to not having the net-neutrality.

I guess eventually,.. all the nations wile force all of its ISP sellers to send and sell the signals only at one most latest and greatest speed ( tech. available ) so that all can be on the same page and can talk the same language.

Though, it's difficult to totally match up and pick up with the most current speed and technology in all areas, as it costs money to install the u/g High density Fiber optic latest wires, and hence, this problem will always remain, imo, that all sellers will have all diff. speeds and you can buy any package you choose...

But, In India and many other nations, they play all kind of politics as mentioned in my first para above,...

Re: News or Bubble

Telcos like Airtel want you to surf or shop from sites of only their choice. They will select applications of their choice , take ransom money from apps owners and provide these apps free to the consumers. Consumers will have no choice but just to use those apps for surfing, searching or shopping. Flipkart was on the board.

So Shakti pai, if you are a airtel customer and don't care about net neutrality , you would have to do shopping from flipkart only, search from bing only, job search from some babajobs instead of naukri.com.

Flipkart would charge you more for all products as you would not be able to see the price from other shopping sites. If you want to surf open internet, you would have to pay high price for net connection.

In short, Telcos want to control how you use internet. Which is free for public otherwise.

Money Game.

Re: News or Bubble

Btw it was going to happen in coming 10-15 days. So this is real news; not bubble. Now that flipkart is gone, Airtel is in soup to go ahead. Victory for internet users.

Thanks for putting it clearly.
This is the first place where i have seen the implications clearly. But this is not like the end of the world. you could always switch to BSNL or other one. And market forces have ultimately forced Flipkart to pull out. It is not some sudden surge of goodwill or government regulation but possibility of loss of customers. Customers can still go to Big Bazaar or Reliance retail if they do not have choice. And the online customers will definitely listen to all mumbo jumbo. The way media is pushing it, we might see some government intervention and then another round of petitions.

Re: News or Bubble

Even I was unclear about this 'net neutrality'. Still am.

I guess it is about "letting Internet be used for data only and not for cable TV or VOIP"?

Everything is data at the end, but probably the each player wants its domain not to be encroached upon by others??

After Airtel, other Telco would have followed the move. As they all are gunda in telecom sector. International bandwidth prices are falling with increase in speed. But try to look at these India telecoms net pack pricing. They have just doubled the prices. I was getting 1GB netpack for around Rs.150... Now Rs. 150 gives you 600mb. Everyone has smartphone these days and all require net connection. So they are forced to buy such expensive netpacks.

They can not bear the fact that internet gives advantage of messaging application, video watching, video calling. They see it as loss of revenue.
So they want to

- Charge more for youtube.
- Charge more for whatsapp or other messaging application.
- Charge more for viber or Skype.

It is like a milkman ask you to pay more & different if you want to get makhan out of milk, or desi ghee out of milk, or extract malai out of milk and use it for your skin. Hope you get that.

It just not about shopping.

And it is not about just shopping.

That would have happened if there were only 2-3 operators. But you have too many of them now. So, some one or other will not play ball. And you have BSNL which would do its own thing.
Now, what is happening is that TRAI is getting invovled in this. And more regulations will just complicate things (like stopping foreign sites like EC).
