work problem - can't hear very well

Friends, I need solution badly.

I have a manager who give me work to do. Problem is he speaks in mumbling tone, very soft, or in some very generic terms and even when I ask to repeat its clear as mud. What to do yaar, I am out of my wits. Sometimes I catch enough words to get a clue then I am able to research and finish the task.

Should I speak to him one on one about this? I'm afraid he take it badly. One more desi with me also agree with me on this, so its not only me who is having problem.

Use this phrase - "Could you speak louder? I can't hear you."

"Could you repeat what you just said? I couldn't hear you!"

English is easy

Figure out which one will be worse. His taking your talking with him badly or your not finishing the tasks as he wanted.

And if he fashions himself as Marlon Brando kind of Godfather, he may really take it badly.

Re: work problem - can't hear very well

I tried all of this, he gets pissed off and makes faces like I'm asking for his money. Example: If you are saying something and the other person don't understand a word, so you speak louder and louder, get frustrated.

Actually he doesn't know details very well about the work he's giving so he mumbles with gestures-you know umm like we do this task and just process the things and umm you go there and get your work done. I once ask him 4 times he turned red and almost shouting then.

In Seinfeld language there is a term called low-talker.

"What?"
"Whaaat??"
"Hm? What?"

Once, there was this husband who complained that his wife couldn't hear well. But he felt she was in denial. So he asked a doctor how he can convince his wife that she had a hearing problem. The doctor told him to find a spot about 25 ft away facing her back, and say something like, "tonight I'd like to eat chicken", in a low voice. If she hears you, then her hearing is okay. If not, go closer to her by 5 ft and repeat. Keep repeating until she hears you. Find out how close you need to be for her to hear you.

Man liked the idea. Facing her back, 25 ft away, he said, "I want to have chicken tonight." He got no reaction. So he went to 20 ft. Same response. So he went closer - 15, 10, 5. When he reached 5 ft she turned around and said, "How many times are you going to repeat the same thing? I told you five times already that it's fine. I'll make you chicken!!"

Moral of this story: Go to a doctor, along with your friend, and get your hearing checked.
