Rush

Rush...of adrenaline.....

And also....rush of emotion....!!

Yes , this film based on formula one racing not only delivers the rush of adrenaline that films about car racing are supposed to deliver , but surprisingly also builds an emotional core around the story.....
.....And by doing so , it makes it stand above ordinary films the way other racing films cannot do....

It's about the real life rivalry of two formula one racers of the seventies---James Hunt and Niki Lauda , both great in their own ways....

But it's not just about the racing feats of the two greats , but also about their personal lives , their wives and girlfriends and their unique personalities and their habits . And it's also how their different personalities make their approach to the sport different .

Both are people who have chosen to walk off the beaten path , because the profession they are in always brings them perilously close to danger if not death . But both are as different from each other as chalk is from cheese .

James Hunt is the flamboyant Englishman---tall and blonde and handsome with flowing hair and an electric charm which works wonders on women . Also he is hard drinking and hard partying and with a devil may care attitude to take risks .

Niki Lauda is the dour Austrian---serious and hard calculating and not so goodlooking to say the best about his looks . Also having a thoughtful and methodical approach to his racing . So Germanic....

And their women...??

Though James Hunt has a wife , in his life women always come and go....
Naturally , his wife divorces him . But all of them , the wife or the other women---all are stunners....

On the other hand , Niki Lauda stays loyal to one woman , and she to him---through thick and thin....

So who is the hero of the film ??
From the start of the film , it's clear that it's James who has the personality of the hero . You might as well change his surname from Hunt to Bond....

But this film ain't no spy thriller....
It changes gear as Niki Lauda suffers a major racing accident that threatens his life and career . And as you see his pain and his brave struggle to get back to the racing track , you cant but help empathize with him . You watch with emotion , his suffering and his permanent facial disfigurement and the painful medical procedures he has to go through and the bleeding and brush with death . And you just keep watching his wife's face and her sorrow and the way Niki watches James racing on television while he is undergoing painful treatment....
And all the while Niki is hoping that one day he will race again against James , and race to win....

And so when the two rivals are pitted against each other in the 1976 championship , it's hard not to sympathize with Niki Lauda and secretly hope that he would win---the man who has gone through so much....

But this is a real life story....
And real life is not always about poetic justice....

So who wins in the end ??
Watch the movie for that....

The director makes both look good in the end---so good that the audience gave a round of applause when the movie ended....
They both look good because they had a healthy regard for each other , or so the director shows---maybe he takes some cinematic liberty....

The seventies era has been well recreated , and you really feel that you are in those times....

The races are heart pounding stuff , and the car racers are shown as men who want to achieve fame by sparring grittily with death . Photography is good and keeps your pulse bounding during the races .

But the film is about the men behind the machines , and the director's real triumph has been to flesh out their persona and their drive for success .

Verdict---Good .

Unbroken

Patriotism is rife in the air in America....films like 'American sniper' ' Against the sun' and 'Unbroken'....

This is a true war story of survival in the midst of all the horrors of world war.....and the hero is a celebrity ; an olympian to boot . His name is Louis Zamperini played in this film by Jack O'Connell .

It is not an action film by any standards , but rather a relatively slow paced film ; maybe that's how a real life war story should be....for the first half is interrupted by flashbacks of the hero's growing up years---childhood experiences of being bullied and beaten , of being punished at school for lack of discipline , of overcoming odds to reach the sporting pinnacle ; only to see dreams thwarted by the coming of war.....landing in a japanese prisoner of war camp instead of the japanese capital Tokyo where the olympics were to be held....

Louis is a bombardier in a warplane that crashes in the Pacific due to faulty spare parts ; a rather ingloriously tepid crash for a person whose warplane has crashed once before due to the hits of enemy fire which is a far more glamorous way of crashing....

But this time his warplane has crashed for the final time , for this time there is no coming back like the last time ; not for a long while anyway....

And he and two other men are stranded at sea in a lifeboat with sharks circling hungrily around , and they have no food to eat except by killing the deadly sharks themselves as bird meat is too unpalatable....and there is the classic dilemma of a person stranded at sea---water water all around , not a drop to drink !!

At the end of this ordeal comes the bigger one---of capture and brutal treatment in a japanese prisoner of war camp....

Not only is Louie beaten repeatedly , he is especially targeted because he is a famous athlete who has the temerity to look at the prison camp's commandant Mutsuhiro Watanabe ( played by Takamasa Ishihara ) in the eye....
And so he is picked for brutal treatment ; and it consists of stripping him naked for being doused with cold water , and regular thwacks on the back by hard bamboo sticks , punches on the nose which leave him bleeding , and the worst is his co prisoners being forced to beat him up on pain of their other comrades to be beaten up....

But Louie gets his revenge when he still manages to look the commandant directly in the eye while being forced to hold up an iron girder , bringing the commandant to tears....
And he also gets the chance to tell his parents by broadcasting on radio Tokyo that he is still alive....

The prisoners are sure that they will be killed if Japan loses the war , but Louis still wants America to win....a true patriot indeed....

Of course , the hero is not the only one whose life was thwarted by world war ; indeed a lot of others in other nations suffered worse.....but our hero has the privilege of being an american---that's why a film is made on him....

One the day I would like to see a film on the life of a poor ukranian peasant whose life was shattered by the war.....but I guess these will be no takers for the film....

The japanese have protested against their depiction in the film , for they have been shown in a negative light .
At the end of such a harrowing experience at their hands , does the hero really remain 'unbroken' as the title suggests ?
Watch the movie for the answers....

The movie has an emotional ending , with shots of american prisoners dancing with joy as they learn that they have won the war and a shot of Louis touching his forehead on the ground on returning to the soil of his beloved America and an old Louis returning to Japan decades later to carry the Olympic torch for the Olympics....

And it was difficult for me not to be affected by this emotion....the emotion went a long way in making me like the film....
Acting by all actors is good , so is music and photography . To be honest , I have seen worse treatments of prisoners in films , but one should remember that those films were fiction while this story is real....

Verdict---Good .

I watched this movie .. there were no chikni chamelis in this movie. Which is a waste, because Jap chics are quite hot! They should have managed to insert some sexytime scenes into the movie to appeal to moviegoers like me.

Re: Ashdoc's mainstream english movie thread

Against the sun

I thought that 'against the sun' meant against the Japanese , since it is a world war 2 tale of three American men who fought against Japan and Japan's flag is the rising sun . But the Japanese don't make an appearance in the whole ordeal of three men stranded at sea after their military aircraft crashes at sea , though the threat of capture by Japanese soldiers is always uppermost on the minds of the stranded men .

Japanese soldiers and sharks---those two are the living threats that the three men have in their minds , and the sharks do duly make their appearance . But it is based on a real life situation , and the sharks are less menacing than what they would have been in what we Indians call a 'filmy' situation . Of course , all this is in the comfort of a theatre ; the very thought of knowing that sharks are circling your life boat must have been harrowing for the three men....and indeed , there is a beautiful shot of the sharks circling taken from above ; beautiful for us in the theatre, terrifying for the stranded men....

The three men are---pilot Harold Dixon (Garret Dillahunt), bombardier Tony Pastula (Tom Felton), and radioman Gene Aldrich (Jake Abel) . And other than living threats , the men have to counter loneliness at sea ( the least of their problems really ) , no food for days except the birds and sharks they kill by either their bare hands or shooting them by pistols , no water to drink except their own urine ( yeah they are forced to drink that using a boot as drinking vessel ) , and above all the merciless sunlight that beats rentlessly on them causing blisters---hence the name of the movie , for facing the heat of the sun is their biggest challenge . Relief comes only at night , or when there is rain which also gives some precious water to drink . But sometimes the rain can herald seastorms , and the seastorms bring on waves of such might and power that it can overturn their lifeboat---leaving the three men trying to hold on to it and gasping for life....

In the middle of all this , the three men try to maintain a semblance of normalcy and drink imaginary tea poured to them from imaginary teacups . And one of them describes the looks of his sister to the other , leaving him imagining a beautiful prim and proper lady smiling to him across the oceans....

At the end of it all do the men survive ?? That is silly question , because if they hadn't then they wouldn't have told their story and we wouldn't have this movie . It is how they survive that is interesting to watch .

The film is less interesting than the other such real life movie that was released just a month before this one---'Unbroken' . That is because there are no human challenges that the three men in this movie have to overcome , unlike the men in 'Unbroken' who ultimately have to face the Japanese . And as everyone knows , humans are the most dangerous species of all ; they are deadlier than the sharks....

But without comparing with other movies , this does stand as a good movie with decent acting performances ; and is a remarkable story of survival . And for that reason , it's worth a watch....

Verdict---Good .

Re: Ashdoc's mainstream english movie thread

The conjuring

Horror comes striking back with THE CONJURING....

Depending on how much you believe in spirits and all that stuff ( I dont ; except when I am in dark and lonely houses and on the night I have watched a horror movie ---tonight !! ) , you are supposed to believe that this is based on a true story .

A family with several kids ( daughters ) moves into a house in the countryside and begins to settle in . Amazingly , they seem to have not made any enquiries about the past history of the house and move in directly without further ado. The have put all their money on the house and there is no way they can now move out after they have found out .

The countryside setting means that real estate prices are lower than cities which gives rise to large houses with attics and cellars and plenty of space for running around when the fun...err....horror starts . There are a lot of trees that hide even the moonlight at night . Also there are no street lights like there are in cities and so the nights are dark and eerie with not a soul moving anywhere nearby the house . The inhabitants of the house are all alone---fearsome....

The family's dog refuses to enter the house ; dogs are supposed to sense spirits . But that does not save it---it's found dead soon . That's the first sign that something's wrong....
Then dead birds begin to drop around the house....

The director builds the tension slowly rather than launching directly into the realms of terror . That's typical Hollywood rather than Bollywood where the ghost loses no time in making extravagant screeching and howling noises .

Indeed , in the first 20 to 25 minutes the film relies on it's reputation as a horror movie rather than the horror itself to frighten us . Small seemingly innocuous things happen which feel sinister and we begin to squirm in our seats .

The large number of females in the house makes it tailormade for a horror situation . Females always look more vulnerable than males and nothing is better for a horror movie than the sight of a female screaming and shouting in sheer terror .

Of course , some of the females in the movie are small children . Typically , they are the ones who make contact with the spirits first ( like in all horror movies---horror movie spirits always start with infecting small children ; or is this also true in real life if spirits really exist ?? ) . Being small children however they dont understand who they are dealing with , and make ' friends ' with the spirit ---again like in all horror movies....so what's new ??

Things get more serious with marks appearing on the bodies of elders and the older children feeling dragged out of their beds at night . Strange smells begin to permeate the atmosphere .

The situation really perks up with the discovery of a dark cellar . And the cellar is centerpiece of all the action that unfolds---do you even have to guess that....??

The director does have some good tricks up his sleeve . Rather than opening fast , any door opens only slowly . Similarly , if a person is walking towards danger , he or she walks oh so slowly....
And all the time the door takes to open or the person is walking towards danger ( oh so slowly... ) we are at the edge of our seat waiting to see what happens next , with our hair standing on end .

The terror that ensues leads to the callup to the house of a couple who have the ability to sense spirits and make them go away . They are the real heroes of the movie and the latter half of the film is dominated by them---that is , when the spirit allows them to do that....

....For the real machine of entertainment for the audience is the spirit itself , and when it manifests itself time and again we get real value for our money spent on buying tickets for the movie .

The girls in the audience were screaming at the right junctures , but one thing I noticed however---they screamed only when women or girls were in trouble and not when men were in trouble . Why such partiality for their own gender , I wonder ?? But not to ponder , for women are a mystery men are yet to solve....he he....

Coming back to the movie , the exorcist couple brings their whole team with cameras and voice recorders and the works , and discovers the history of the house---of witches and murdered children ; all of which happened in the past . What they discover more sinisterly however is that the family they have arrived to protect is in deadly danger of being annihilated.....

But is that the only family affected ?? Or the spirits can attack the exorcist couple and their children too ?? And can they successfully complete their task of getting rid of the spirit ??
Go and watch the movie for answers to these questions....

The movie is promising in the opening section and entertains in the middle section . In fact it is when the ghost is subtly making its presence felt that it gives most jitters . In the last section of the movie however , the actual manifestation of the spirit and the exorcism with jumping up and down of bodies and the blood spitting from mouth is less terrifying than expected largely because it has been seen in other movies before .

Still the film does deliver some doses of terror---and we do need them once in while don't we.....

Verdict---decent enough .

Re: Ashdoc's mainstream english movie thread

Lincoln

The world in the mid 19th century---a world in the grip of colonialism and a world of slavery.....

.......And no one feels the crushing burden of slavery more than the black man of Africa---their alleged mental inferiority and lack of civilization in sub saharan Africa makes them a race looked down upon as subhumans fit only to serve others , their dark skin further deepens this racism , and their considerable physical strength makes them thought of as ideal beasts of burden.....

The slave markets of America and the barbaric middle east are awash with black slaves kidnapped by brutal slave traders from the coasts and interiors of Africa , sometimes aided by their own black brethren.....

While the Turkish sultan needs them in the castrated form as eunuchs to guard his harem , the American white man needs him as laborer on his cotton plantations....

Its the black man's hard labour that drives the economy of the southern part of the United States.....and without him to serve the needs of the whites of the southern United States as a slave the entire way of life of the southerners would collapse like a pack of cards.....

But can they stop the powerful winds of the civilized impulse of emancipation ??

.....For leading the charge of the anti slavery agitation is the President of the United States no less---and his name is Abraham Lincoln.....

Needless to say he is a great man leading a great nation.....

So can Hollywood produce a fittingly great film on him ?? Let's see....

The movie begins in the middle of the war that has been unleashed as the southern states declare their secession from the United States in view of the impending anti slavery decision that is going to be imposed on them by the northern states and Abraham Lincoln declares war on them calling them mere rebels.....

The United States is actually going to civil war for the freedom of people brought from the alien shores of the African continent !! If that is not the measure of the greatness of America then what is ?? For hundreds of thousands of young American men are dying for stopping something like slavery---something that is accepted as part of everyday life in the middle east during that time without batting an eyelid , something that exists as the tyranny of the upper castes on untouchables in the India of that period !!

But in order to foist this greatness upon America , it requires the tireless efforts of a great President.....

And indeed , the emancipation of slaves is the one big aim of his life , something that he stakes his entire political career on.....

He is determined to bring about the end of slavery by all means , by hook or crook.....

By crook ??

Yeah , this great man is ready to use all means whether fair or foul to get votes of congressmen---for those votes are needed for passing the 13th amendment to the US constitution which abolishes slavery . For him the goal is important , not the means to reach it.....and the goal , can anybody doubt its laudability ??

So congressmen are coaxed cajoled browbeaten to bring them to accept his point of view , and his hirelings pass money and promises of opportunities of earning money to recalcitrant congressmen.....all and everything for a good and just cause....

All this while a great war rages on killing people in the thousands....

But like all great men , Lincoln knows that the great questions of the day sometimes have to be settled by the force of arms , and he is not averse to shedding blood for his august goals....

And the blood that may be shed could be of his son , for his son insists on joining the armed forces to the chagrin of Abraham's wailing wife who fears losing another son for she has lost one already.....

Indeed , his wife seems to be ever complaining ever wailing for she simply cannot match his greatness....
But great or not , she is a loyal wife as they used to be in the 19th century---and Lincoln is a deeply attentive husband and father.....
....For he listens to his wife and fulfills his son's wishes only to allow him a posting well behind the war's frontlines.....

So does his nepotism distract from his greatness ??

Hardly....

For as you watch him talking to friends and foes alike convincing them of the need to end slavery you begin to have respect for the man....
......And the interesting stories he tells and the anecdotes he relates in his own inimitable manner give you an idea of his intellect and his sense of humour....

Or maybe it is the acting of Daniel Day Louis that makes accepting Lincoln with his small faults and all his greatness so easy.....

Aiding Lincoln in his quest is an extremist politician who has made it his life's mission to end slavery from the land....but he is too impatient , and Lincoln has to use all his powers of persuation to convince him of the need to be patient and not do anything rash....

They are all good men really , and their sheer enthusiasm makes your heart bat for their ambition....

But the real star of the show is the day the anti slavery amendment is put to vote.....
You can feel your heart pounding as the one by one the votes are counted.....

And when the results of the vote came out---there were tears in my eyes , just like they were there were in the eyes of those black people who had assembled to watch the vote with a mixture of hope and fear....

So were they tears of joy or sadness ?? Of victory or failure ??
To those who know their history well , the answer is well known....
But for those who dont , this is a fine chance to brush up your history ( my fave subject in school , by the way )

Its not an action packed movie , and the its not about the American civil war....
But what it lacks in action , it makes up with emotion as you see history in the making.....
And the emotion makes it well worth a watch.....
At least I thought so....

Verdict---good .

Lol. Even docji ka review seems overwhelming.

It was on Netflix long back. I watched first few minutes and wanted to 'watch it another day'. Not sure if it is still on Netflix, but let me first check if I can finish half of doc's review.

I liked every movie in which Daniel Day Lewis acted

Best: Gangs of New York and There will be blood

Least: The last of Mohicans.

I had seen all that horror movies had to offer---creaking doors , eerie quiets and haunted underground cellars....or so I thought....

But as I sat down to see Oculus I realised that I had discovered a new vein of horror---without the same old tricks that had been done to death....

Of course , the primary rule remains the same---it is the dark and evil forces who win in the end....

This time round , it's a mirror that's been haunted since ages---and it has ruined generations of families long before....

And a determined young woman wants to prove that it's haunted and destroy it---for it will clear her father of the guilt of killing his wife and will clear her brother of the guilt of killing his father if it can be proved that the mirror possessed them and caused the killings.....

To prove her convictions she brings to aid the most modern technology in the form of computers and cameras and whatnot....

But why does she have to buy the same mirror at an auction and force her brother to accompany her when she wants to prove the mirror's hauntedness and destroy it , especially when he has been just released from the institution where he has been held since his father's murder ??? That's to give us the instant chills and thrills we want and make the spending of our money worth the while , of course....

Younger brother is reluctant to undergo the experiment of proving the mirror's hauntedness in front of a recording camera as he wants to escape his past , but he is given no choice by his beautiful dominating elder sister.....

So the mirror is set and cameras are recording things as they happen---this in the same house where the murders occurred 10 years ago....

As the elder sister begins to give a running commentary of what happens in the house , so does the horror begin.....

Both siblings are reminded of what happened 10 years ago , and as the movie moves forward we see flashes of what happened on that fateful day.....

And soon events that happened 10 years ago and events that are happening presently begin to intertwine....

It's not clear whether what is being shown happened in the past or is happening now.....

As past events tumble before the siblings' eyes , the events of the past come to life....

And it's a grisly past , with shockers of horror every now and then....

But what about the present ??

The present turns grim too , as day turns into night and light turns into darkness and the evil forces come to life....

As it becomes clear that the mirror is still haunted , the audiences realize that brother and sister are playing a very dangerous game indeed....a game that could prove to be their endgame....

So can the siblings prove that the mirror is haunted ??
Can they destroy it so that it's evil spell is finally over ??

Watch the movie for that.....

It was nice to see a strong woman ( played by Karen Gillan ) dominate the movie whereas other horror movies show women only as weak creatures screaming to be saved....

The shocks and chills make your hair stand on end , and the audience was gasping as the shocks of horror came....

Here's wishing you a happily sleepless night after watching this movie....

Verdict---want more of the same ; waiting for part 2...

The host

The earth has been invaded by aliens . The alien souls enter human bodies and take them over and in this way they have taken over most of the human beings on earth .

How to detect that a human body has been taken over by aliens ?? A strange glow comes into the eyes....

......And most former humans on earth have this glow in their eyes....
Only a few real humans are left . They are hiding in deep crevasses carrying out a guerilla war against the alien occupiers .

The aliens are searching for the remaining humans who are fighting for survival . One of the remaining humans gets caught and her body too is taken over by an alien soul . But her mind is too strong and resists this takeover of her body . She escapes from clutches of the human bodies having alien souls who have captured her and makes her way back to human settlement .

But she still has the strange glow in her eyes that marks her out as a human body taken over by an alien !!

So will the humans accept her as one of their own ??
And what will she achieve among humans when her own body is caught between the alien soul that has occupied her and the exceptionally strong human mind that resists this occupation ??

Watch the movie for that....

So is it another sci fi flick ?? Another one about humans and aliens fighting each other with superadvanced weapons ??

No , in fact it is a film about winning the fight using an old weapon called love and tenderness.....

About romance blossoming---and romance fulfilled---in a confrontation between races from different planets.....

For it is romance and the pining for lost love that makes the heroine's mind resist the alien soul's occupation of her body.....love for her lover and affection for her younger brother.....

And it is the search for that love that makes her run back among humans.....

As the aliens begin to track her down to her hiding hole bringing the whole human settlement at risk another battle is going on within her---her alien soul falls in love with a goodlooking boy much to the chagrin of her mind which loves her old lover !!

Behind all this pining for love I suspected the hand of a sensitive woman....
But the director of the film is a man....
As the credits rolled I found out what I suspected---the movie is based on a novel written by a woman.....

So will love conquer all and everything---just like a woman would like it to happen ??
I really wish that things were that way---that the slogans like ' make love not war ' were translated into reality.....that all soldiers dropped weapons and won hearts rather than wars....

Real life however is different.....
But for those who believe in the power of love there is this movie....

Verdict---Not a bad outing.....

The call

America's obsession with crazed psychos continues---this time with ' The Call '......

Halle Berry ( looking attractive in a smart new hairstyle ) works in the police operations room as a officer who takes calls of victims and directs police squads to crime scenes .

.....And like any beautiful sensitive woman ( dont we all like our women that way....) has a propensity to get emotionally mixed up in the plight of the victims she gets calls from.....

But one day Halle loses her peace of mind when a female victim who is being stalked by a psycho and from whom she gets a call gets killed due to a silly mistake Halle has made during the call.....

Halle changes her job while still working for the police , until she is confronted with a similar situation again---that of a young girl being kidnapped by the same crazed man.....

Halle cant fail this time.....not again , especially when confronted with the same killer.....she's got to save the lovely girl she's promised she would save.....

So can she.....???

Watch the film for that.....

The film is an edge of the seat thriller that keeps you tense throughout.....

And where's tension there's interest---from the audience that is.....

If you get entertained by films which bring on the tension then certainly this film is for you.....

.....For as the chase to save the victim in the killer's clutches hots up , so does the body count increase.....

.....And needless to say , the body count is that of innocent people.....

......Innocents being smashed by spades and burnt alive after being doused by petrol---its all there.....

Yeah , nothing works like little bit of cruelty to bring in the viewers.....

Halle has that remarkable propensity that all actors in thrillers possess---that of going without untrammelled fear into dangerous places where others would be scared to tread.....

......And the killer has an obsession with beautiful women like her.....

All the better to give some thrills....

Thrills to bring relaxation of body and mind to your dull existence....

Not a bad outing I had , I would say.....

Verdict---nothing fantastic , but good enough.....

Re: Ashdoc's mainstream english movie thread

Olympus has fallen

The United States---the most powerful nation on earth.....

Trouble is , when you become more powerful your list of enemies grows longer and deadlier.....

Last time it was Osama Bin Laden and his barbaric horde who launched an attack on the US....

In this movie its the North Koreans....

This starving nation wants its tanks to steamroll over its neighbour South Korea , but the US army which is on South Korean soil stands in its way.....

So an outlandish plan is hatched to take over the White house and take the US President and other important state officials as hostages so that the US can be blackmailed into removing its army from South Korea....

But as the movie progresses it is revealed that the plan is much more sinister than that.....

So North Korean terrorists actually bring the plan to fruition....

Problem is , at least I thought that the whole operation of an attack by a small starving nation on a mighty superpower looked too easily accomplished.....

Is it really so easy to invade the greatest power in the world and rapidly bring it to its knees ?? At least I dont think so....

Anyway , as the plan becomes successful only one man can penetrate the now terrorists' controlled White house.....

Its a situation like the one in which we saw Bruce Willis in the movie Die hard 1---one good man alone in a building controlled by terrorists , using its various passageways to finish them off one by one while their head honcho holds important people hostage in the main operations room....

Of course , the stakes in this movie are higher as the plan is to destroy the United States itself---but the fighting and the efforts of one man against a bunch of ruthless killers is less convincing and less entertaining than Die hard 1.....

So is our man successful in eliminating the evil ones ?? For in the end , despite of all the display of high tech weaponry in the film , it still boils down to hand to hand fighting between the hero and the villain....

Go watch the movie for that.....

This movie tries to remind you of the great action movies of the eighties and nineties which had top action heroes like Sylvester Stallone , Arnold Shwarznegger , Jean Claude Van Damm , Bruce Willis etc---but it does not really match the better ones among those movies....

Verdict---nothing special ; good for some timepass....
