Linguistics - Ideas Needed

Hey guys,

I need some help, ideas.

For a long time I have had a desire to learn languages. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, I was unable to do so. Now I am in a position to do that.

Anyone who has learnt a language after the age of 20, would have valuable experience. Can you share them here? How did you go about it, what are the hurdles, how long does it take? etc

Thanks in anticipation

I have not done this but I had a friend who did not know Hindi at all... but he learnt it by watching Hindi movies... constantly, with no sub-titles. Maybe you can try that too...

I have been watching Dora and surprisingly, I picked up many spanish words.
No formal education. Perhaps its easier if there is someone you know who can speak the language you intend to learn.

Re: Linguistics - Ideas Needed

The only way to learn a new language is to be surrounded by it completely .. so speak and hear only spanish if that's what you are learning. This is the method used by Rossetta Stone, publisher of learn language books and software.

This is how multilingual kids pick up and speak/read/write many languages.. at first they sound confused but over time the miracle of putting the pieces together takes place.

Have a colleague who speaks fluent punjabi, telugu, english, hindi.. freaks the hell out of everybody around... punjabi and telugu combo is rare. Family from Andhra lived in Chandigarh for decades, kids picked up both languages.

I have the Spanish software (South American), very nice. It records your pronunciation of words and checks, if not correct it makes you correct it until it's perfect. It's a bit costly but it works.

If you are in the US and want to learn Spanish, there are many options.. almost every community college has an inexpensive weekly or 3 times a week class in the evening that one can take. Works best if you learn the language as a family.

Re: Linguistics - Ideas Needed

How much time does it take to learn a language? Now of course this depends on the "level of learning". But typically, do you know the time taken to readh various levels?

after the age of 20 you are 21 I am guessing?

you gotta be careful what you ask for Shring. Experience learning language at 21 is very different from learning at the age of 41 or 61 or 81. anyone telling you the experience of learning at 52 (like Shaktman is telling you) will not be useful if you are only 21....

Re: Linguistics - Ideas Needed

kkk,

I used 20 for a specific reason. There are a lot of guys who have learnt some language at an early age (say 6/7 years). That experience is of no use to me. I want someone who has learnt it formally. That is why 20+

Re: Linguistics - Ideas Needed

and I am going to say the same thing again. 20+ is a very wide range and the experience is not the same if someone tries at 21 or 31 or 41 or 51 or.... so someone who learns a new language at 22 after coming out of the college and learns it to fill his/her time till they get a job will do it very very differently to someone who is now retired, has more time on their hands and want to learn a new language or someone who is in mid-management and want to learn the language to explore job in another geography.
