Lightbulb Interview question about QA - how would you answer?

I had an interview with a local company for the QA intern position. I was asked the following question, which I struggled to answer:

How would you go about QAing Notepad?

Obviously, they were interested about the thought process that goes in to this kind of work. How would you have answered to this question? Please assume you have no or very little QA experience.

Re: Interview question about QA - how would you answer?

I would ask for features which are typically given to a QA guy for testing, list them down and then test against them e.g.
1.)Edit :- type all keys by keyboard
2.)Save :- close ,open and see

Re: Interview question about QA - how would you answer?

1) Launch Notepad, Maximise, Minimise, Exit Notepad --> test for normal operation/crashes
2) File menu -- open files, close files, etc.
3) Edit menu - Copy , Paste..

Also try from command line notepad.exr <filename.txt> and see if the file opens or if not existing then does a new one get created.

Basically test all the features available to a user.

Re: Interview question about QA - how would you answer?

Thanks guys for the answers. I answered all that as far as testing the functionality of the application, like testing open/exit, keyboard accepts all the keys, file open/save/close/print, etc. How do you test the "bounds" of the application like Notepad?

I suggested to test if it can handle unlimited amount of text. Okay, so how do you do that? Write a program that keeps adding more and more text through a loop, and benchmark the previous best. But that's one... anything else?

Not looking for the right or wrong answers here, as there are none I guess. Just want to see what else could be tested while developing Notepad.

Re: Interview question about QA - how would you answer?

I am not basically a QA guy, but have done little bit of it when I was working for a small project.

As far as functional testing goes, I find matrix method a best method to test functionalities. Basically you list down all features and all states and form a matrix out of it. (it genereates huge but exhaustive test cases)

e.g. In notepad you have features like Open a file. Now notepad at a time can be in any state like file is already opened (saved / unsaved), no file is opened but GUI is launched, no file is opened and GUI is yet to be launched. Map all these such states to a particular feature and form a set of test cases.

As far as boundry testing goes, there are numerous cases like :
1. File size
- How much it can hold in buffer without saving
- How much large file it can save
- How much large file it can open
2. System state
- How it behaves when system is running with low memory (poor quality software will blow off your buffer and you'll loose data)
- How it behaves when system is crashed. (it is not expected to save un-saved contents, but you should always check how it behaves)
3. Non-local files
- If you have opened non-local file and someone pulls a plug while you are editing, but puts it back, before you save it (you can create atleast 3-4 cases out of this one)

You can create many cases if you consider these parameters : #instances of notepad, single file opened by 2 editors, locale of the system etc etc.

Think of many of such parameters and create test-cases out of it.
