Question Does anyone use wallpapers anymore?

Not on your computer, dummy, nor on your mobile or screen of any kind. I am talking about wallpaper on the walls.

The wallpapers used to be a big thing 20-30 years ago, specially in shops and restaurants. They were considered as chic, quick, decorate, convenient and not very expensive alternative to painting or panelling etc. But now I hardly see anyone using wallpaper on their walls. How come the trend changed? Newer wall finishings or are the wallpapers simply out or considered cheap & gaudy?

Re: Does anyone use wallpapers anymore?

We just did it at my house like 4 months back . I guess the problem is water seeping the walls . Tiles are new paint jobs are much more resilient to water ..

Used to be popular but now no more. I haven't seen any residence or office with wallpapers for several years now ... though some commercial places and banks still have them.

Wall papers are unhealthy for home environment, I think ... retain dust. Pain to remove them. Hiding place for bugs during rainy season ... not to forget mold and mildew.

Re: Does anyone use wallpapers anymore?

In US wallpapers are still quite routine in some homes and especially motel and hotels.

I can understand the hygiene part to some extent, but they can be easily cleaned, no? But they aren't very difficult to remove, specially compared with paint. I mean if you were redecorating and wanted to paint your walls, you would first have to rub out the old paint with sandpaper or something, which would create untold clouds of paint dust, and unless you did the job well, the old paint would show through the new paint. And it would take days...

Humidity and germs.. hmm...

Wallpapers have a adhesive backing or you apply sort of glue ... have you ever tried removing that stuff from the wall? Not easy. All it takes is sandpaper to scrap loose paint off the wall. Wallpapers make walls look beautiful ... not a doubt ... but ridges along design hold onto dirt and dust. Not good for a family with young kids. Same is with the carpets ... you wouldn't believe kilo of dirt you will find underneath the rugs and carpets if you were to remove them after few years.

Wouldn't the professionals have some easier way of removing wallpaper? And believe me, scraping old paint off the wall isn't an easy job, specially getting evenness. Then repainting needs some sort of lapi/ astar (underlay) job, drying it for a day or so (unless using an expensive wall putty) and then the new paint job, 2 coats at least with a gap of a day or two. Then there is the smell of paint + turpentine...

Then, is wallpaper a good option for a place which does not have much exposure to dust and humidity, like an air-conditioned office?

Re: Does anyone use wallpapers anymore?

when was 10-12 yrs old. My bro got some wallpapers and hung over the wall in the room. When my dad saw it, he was so furious as we just moved to our new home and dad had spend a lot of money on coloring. From that day I have never used a wallpaper in the house.
And now find them funny so no use

I think all these home decorating trends keep changing from time to time. The only place where I can stand a wall paper is in place of crown molding (if there is one).
