Angry DARU in Gandhiji's Sabarmati Ashram

साबरमती आश्रम में मिले शराब के पाउच

Mar 24, 12:28 am

Re: DARU in Gandhiji's Sabarmati Ashram

Prohibition has never worked, not in any part of the world. Even in USA, there was prohibition long ago, but finally the government repealed it.

In India some states like Andhra Pradesh and Haryana have tried prohibition and it failed miserably.

Alcohol is something which a human being will consume, no matter what. Those who dont drink do it on their own resolve and for whatever reasons.

Gujarat's dry policy is a hypocrisy. Some folks I know who have worked in Gujarat say that the local police supplies alcohol to your home and for parties. Alcohol is easily available, albeit at a premium in any part of Gujarat.

I have mentioned this before, but here goes. A friend I used to know in college days owned a bar in Mumbai. He used to tell us that if there was a day day, like Gandhi Jayanti, then the regular drinkers would drink a little more the day before and his sales shot up atleast a couple of days before the dry day and the day after the dry day. Why do we have dry day on certain days is beyond me. Those who wish to drink will drink. Why stop them?

Only thing that government can or should do is spread awareness, bombard with public service ads on TV and in media about ills of being an alcoholic, etc.

Re: DARU in Gandhiji's Sabarmati Ashram

People get abusive and behave badly on forums such as echarcha, so such forums should be banned, right?

C'mon EC, there are no absolute rules. Would you want to remove laws against rape just because the laws haven't stopped a rape every 6 minutes? Or theft? or Robbery etc..etc.. Or Should we remove laws against bribery because they don't work anyway?

We in Gujarat don't want to see 12-13 year olds drunk (as in Haryana). We like the fact that women are safe on our streets even at late night. Instead of preaching against Prohibition, we should move for stricter implementation of existing laws.

If cops can be strong enough to impose the laws it will happen . Alas they have forgotten the power they have hence this will happen . Also corruption has also played a massive role possibly due to massive dissatisfaction

If the women all wore full body burkhas, they would be safer. So we should pass a law that requires all women to wear burkhas - and impose strict penalties (including public flogging) of any woman who breaks the law.

Let's see - what else. We dont want 12-13 year olds driving cars because they dont know how to drive and will be susceptible to dangerous accidents. Lets ban all cars from the roads. Anyone caught driving a car will be subject to strict penalties (including public flogging and maybe cutting off the right foot so they cant step on the accelerator any more).

Hmmm .. what other good can we do today?

Re: DARU in Gandhiji's Sabarmati Ashram

alcohol destroys individuals who for some reason have gone into depression. drinking in parties/with-friends in a feel-good mental state & doing the same in depression (ghum bhulane ke liye) has drastically opposite effects.any dampner/inhibitor, even if its a poorly implemented law like prohibition in india, is good.it may instill fear into the depressed minds and some individuals, even if minuscule, might be saved from destruction.just a thot.

Anything in excess - or in special circumstances - is bad. You know people die from peanut allergies too. Lets put a prohibition on peanuts. Lactose intolerant? No milk for you!! You know how many poor brides are burned by kerosene being poured on them? Bye bye kerosene! Too much lung cancer going around. See ya later Tobacco! People get their eyes put out, fingers blown off and even die from firecrackers. Lets just sit sround an electric fire on diwali. Oh but, people get electrocuted to death as well. No more electricity - go back to kerosene lanterns. But didnt we already ban kerosene?? Hmmmmm .....

What other good can we do today??

smelly why so grumpy?
Law in India is a joke, with all the corruption and our government. Such laws will only be written on paper and later forgotten.

Re: DARU in Gandhiji's Sabarmati Ashram

Attend a marriage in Delhi, and you will find all the bandwalas closing at 11pm. Same thing with party halls. Why? Public awareness? Not really. For years the citizens had been pleading about the loud music etc. at late night. The administration had issued many a times. But still the public carried on with the loud music at all hours. Then they passed some law about it, and the police is strict in implementing it.. Lo! The public awareness achieved. No late night shaadi music, private parties, jagrans etc. disturbing public peace.

Something similar about smoking in trains.

is logic se to public kapde use kar ke latak ke suicide bhi karte hai, to kya kapde ban kare?

kuchh context hona mangta dude comparison mein.

out of the above, you can only compare a ban on ciggis with a ban on alchohol.

And why not ghee? I can guarantee you ghee kills more people than alcohol. Sugar?

So did the Delhi Police have to ban music? No. They banned playing music on loudspeaker at certain hours.

So in Gujarat, why do you have to ban alcohol? All you need is some strict laws and enforcement, so that people dont get drunk create nuisance in public. Why do civilized people have to to buy alcohol in the black market? In the process government loses a lot of potential revenue.
