Death is no answer: Amnesty International

Quote:
Death is no answer: Amnesty International m.thehindu.com/news/national/death-is-no-answer-amnesty-international/article5126593.ece/

Amnesty International India has opposed the death
sentence awarded by a Delhi court to the four convicts
in the December 2012 case of gang rape and murder of
a physiotherapy student
Far-reaching procedural and institutional reform, and
not the death penalty, is what is needed to tackle the
endemic problem of violence against women in the
country, Amnesty International India said on Friday
opposing the death sentence awarded by a Delhi court
to the four convicts in the December 2012 case of gang
rape and murder of a physiotherapy student.
It was a “horrific crime and our deepest sympathy goes
out to the victim’s family. Those responsible must be
punished, but the death penalty is never the answer,”
said Director Tara Rao.
“Sending these four men to the gallows will accomplish
nothing except short-term revenge. While the
widespread anger over this case is understandable,
authorities must avoid using the death penalty as a
‘quick-fix’ solution. There is no evidence that the death
penalty is a particular deterrent to crime, and its use
will not eradicate violence against women in India.”
Human Rights Watch urged the Indian government to
announce an official moratorium on the death penalty
and work towards abolishing it altogether.
About rape incidents, HRW said: “We need systemic
reforms, a trained and accountable police force, and
end to the culture of blaming the victim more often
than the perpetrator by commenting on lifestyle choices
of women.”
I believe the court has just done one small par of the job, in what must be termed as a larger solution to rape problems in our society. Delivering the bigger solution of preventing the rapes has not been done by the politicians.

Cool Re: Death is no answer: Amnesty International

Leaving them in the jails for years is also not a perfect solution. Public must respect human beings & avoid doing crimes.

Financial punishment may be the alternatives.

Re: Death is no answer: Amnesty International

I too agree death is not the answer here. Why can't they be castrated... and then used for medical and scientific experimentation What have the rabbits... the mice... the guinea pigs... the frogs... the cadavers... the echans... the monkeys... the dogs... various animals used for such experiments ever done to you How can man poke and torture and inject them with vile chemicals... endlessly... but bring in morality when criminals are presented for the same

Re: Death is no answer: Amnesty International

Death is a scare tactic.
Future offenders should think twice before committing a crime.
Life imprisonment ensures free food, clothes ,shelter and official protection. Then many get their jail term reduced .some go out on paroles and commit another crimes.Infact these days even internet is available to prisoners.
Wow!! Life is good inside a jail too.

Capital punishment is the best punishment for pre planned murders/ rapes.

Re: Death is no answer: Amnesty International

Death penalty is a closure. Does Amnesty want the society to carry the burden of the criminals for years ?? It's ok so long as it is used in 'rarest of rare' cases, like this one.

Let's notice that Amnesty has neglected to give an alternative. They have not said what punishment should be awarded. Instead they have taken up the endless issue of "reforms" etc.

Re: Death is no answer: Amnesty International

This maha chutiya organization, Amnesty International, only rakes up controversies and does Ad campaigns with big celebrities to enjoy their company, I guess.. I have never heard of any worthwhile things done by them.

I am totally appalled by this disgusting photo-shopped picture of The Dalai Lama they have used for a anti-torture campaign. As somebody who holds Dalai Lama in very high regard, I wish I could protest against this blasphemy. What can be achieved other than some media publicity? No real ground realities will change with this ad.

An image of Tibet's exiled leader is paired with the line, "A man who does not have a Rolex watch at 50 years old has failed in his life."

Quote:
Torture is not truth.

“Governments that use torture… claim these techniques give them precious information, but history has shown that tortured people are usually willing to say anything at all to make the pain stop.”

It hasn't been established, the Guardian notes, whether the Dalai Lama, Lagerfeld or Iggy Pop have actually agreed to participate in the campaign, but it hasn't stopped the organization from spreading the leaflets in Belgian cities.

“We thought it was a quirky but un-maudlin way to attract attention to a tragic reality that often happens in secret,” Hensmans added.

Amnesty launched its Stop Torture campaign in May.

“Governments around the world are two-faced on torture - prohibiting it in law, but facilitating it in practice” said Salil Shetty, Amnesty International’s Secretary General, at the launch.

“Torture is not just alive and well – it is flourishing in many parts of the world. As more governments seek to justify torture in the name of national security, the steady progress made in this field over the last thirty years is being eroded.”

Re: Death is no answer: Amnesty International

The only crime deterrent is a swift and severe repercussion to the crime committed. Don't politicize. Give police 100% authority to take action right after the crime is committed. Once the crime is proved, give them capital punishment. Yes, that will work. Torturing people will only cost you time/money/resources. These people dont deserve it. OK, maybe not hang but give them lethal injections. Do this to the first 200 people who rape others and you will see a drop in the crime rate.

Get the situation under control first. Then we can slowly work towards educating people/ teaching them how to respect women etc.
That will take 20 years and upwards.
