US Green Card

Did you know that to work in defense related projects, one usually requires a security clearance and only citizens would be allowed to take up the job?

But now did you know that to join the US armed forces, you do not even require a green card, let alone be a citizen of the United states?

In fact, if you are selected, the Armed forces will file the petition for your green card. Cool, Huh?

Diplubhai,

this has been true for long time now. Senators are just trying to speed up the process now.

Ya.. u rite!

Defense projects are carried out by private firms, and security clearance is a mechanism put forth by government to control who has and who doesn't have access to classified info.
Oddly enough, it doesn't apply for government.

Also to get the security clearance is such a major headache..but once you have it you are all set as far as defense projects and other government projects are concerned.

but it is much easier to work for the US Army as a soldier.
Look at the irony of the situation.

Yeah, but based on what gather, it's mostly headache, than any 'clearance' in truest sense.

I do not think it is ironic at all.

Being a foot soldier does not mean you will be privy to defense secrets, but being a contractor working on secret defense project development does mean you will be provy to SBU and classified information.

The irony is that the soldier is the one who will guard the nation.
you bestow the fate of your independence, your freedom to one who is not even a green card holder.

On the other hand, ch.ertiya defense projects ke liye bhi mahino ka clearance wait karna padta hain.

A few weeks back, two soldiers were awarded 'green card' posthumously. That I find Irony.

they are a big hassle to get, top secret requires you to be a citizen and all your first relatives to be citizens (mother, father, brother, sister children and reside in this country. they also require 10 year background investigations of where you lived, worked and study. they will also come and interview your neighbors and friends. i know some people who have them and they are ticket to garunteed employment right now, they'll teach a monkey SAP if the monkey has a clearacne since they cost so much to get.

yep. been there, done that

though not top secret, but I do have a secret clearance (for defense projects) and MBI (civilian projects).

For MBI though, it is last 7 years of your life.

I doubt that someone getting top secret has to have relatives citizens and be residents too. That's too far flung. No one has control over one's relatives and where they live. Just because a US citizen's brother/sister decides to live in France, doesn't make this guy less patriotic or a danger to US.

The "secret" clearance is not a big deal. It involves a background check on criminal history and a FBI check on records and some credit history verification. yes, the top-secret one involves talking to your friends, relatives, coworkers etc.

Also, your clearance for one deptt does not make you cleared for another. and just because one is cleared does not entitel him to secret/top secret information. It is despensed on a need-to-know basis.
