Former Pakistani Cricketer Arshad Khan Is Now An Uber Driver In Sydney

Former Pakistani Cricketer Arshad Khan Is Now An Uber Driver In Sydney

In a cricket-crazy nation like India where even the least successful cricketers turn into commentators, analysts or columnists post retirement, such a story might come as a shock. But as it turns out, Arshad Khan - who represented Pakistan for over 9 years - is currently a cab driver in Sydney.

Khan made his debut in 1997 and played 58 ODIs and 9 Tests for his country. The off-spinner picked up 32 wickets in Tests and 56 in ODIs. The highlight of his career was perhaps taking the wicket of Sachin Tendulkar in an 2006 ODI versus India at Peshawar.
But 9 years after his last international match, he was spotted driving an Uber cab in Sydney by Facebook user Ganesh Birle.

The resident of Hyderabad who was visiting Australia wrote about the chance encounter: "He was the driver of our cab and we started chatting, he told me that he is from Pakistan and lives in Sydney. Also that he has been to Hyderabad many times when he was playing for Lahore Badshahs something in ICL. After which I asked him his full name and then I was shocked to see his face which I could partially recognize. I shook has his hand and left."

"He was avoiding the conversation all the time, but at the same time he couldn’t help but talk about his India connection. Imagine he introduced himself as ‘I from Pakistan but I have been here in Sydney for long time now’. Also like a good Uber driver he offered us water and stuff when we sat in the car."

Re: Former Pakistani Cricketer Arshad Khan Is Now An Uber Driver In Sydney

Maybe I am missing something. Why is this news. A former cricketer is now an Uber driver. OK.

Happens to many people - some career missteps or plain wrong place at wrong time, and end up in a less paying or less fancy profession. The acclaimed classical dancer or singer and known AIR personality may be teaching brats Bollywood dance/song in phoren, dedicated teacher doing tuitions, software guy who started own company that went kaput drives yellow-cab...

Many people live in Australia with no visa, and work long hours for peanuts. They lie to family back home. Folks work in USA as nanny, driver, cook, gas station assistant, who are very rich and own property in India. No one cares.

Maybe ex-colleagues could arrange a benefit-match or something for this cricketer.. hey I have another idea.. move to a desi locality in Sydney and start an "authentic" cricket training institute. Secret: provide good quality bat, ball, wickets, knee pads... the moms hate to have to buy that from India or pay $$$ in Australia.

Some sportsmen have taken bad business decisions or mishandled their money after they are past their prime, its so easy to continue the same standard of living while your finances shrink rapidly.

One doesn't generally expect sportsmen who have played the highest level of professional sport to be driving cabs for a living, some take up coaching in schools or their own institute. I wonder what pension schemes Pakistan cricket has for test players, of course one needs to have played a certain number of games and achieved certain laurels.

Bjorg Born the tennis legend, the era he played in, and the way inflation has happened, how his businesses failed, was on the verge of auctioning his grand slam trophies. This is when the veterans got together and scheduled like a world tour of exhibition tennis matches. I had the lucky chance to watch this legend play in Bangalore, alongside Pat Cash, Vijay, Anand Amritraj, etc.

Uber driver makes decent money and he is in Australia.... So what was he doing before that in Pakistan ? Running multi million dollar empire ?

A full time Uber driver can make upto 5 grand a month . He is doing fine......

I seriously doubt that figure, don't think 5K earnings, must be total revenue. We argued about this in the uber rape thread i think.

Chris Cairns was driving a truck to meet the ends when he was involved in the match fixing scandal..
