Is egg vegetarian or non-vegetarian? is milk also non-vegetarian

So after the mushroom thread by Indian ... and so many vegetarian issues by our self-styled highly out-spoken vege-aryan-german, I thought, it should be fitting that we start this thread to commemorate the fact, that we can still discuss this topic much rationally, without getting into religious sutras and what not ...

So the question is "Is Egg Vegetarian?" ... I am a vegetarian, and I love cakes. I am a Jain by birth and Jainism supposedly has a strict no-no about Egg. I wonder Mahavir ever got the time to speak about it. I have searched but couldnt find any specific instance where he said something about Egg or for that matter milk. Leaving this religious issue aside and the so-called ovo, owow, lacto, veggie, vegan type classifications, which make little sense to me, as there can several permutations of folks who want to eat Meat and yet get classified as some sort of a vegetarian.

Egg and Milk are like borderline cases ... kinda like boundary conditions where the definition of vegetarian breaks yet remains intact.

What do you, this 21st century, thinks about Egg and Milk? Let this thread become testimony to the fact that both progressive and religious (yet not completely backward) Indians decided to understand this issue from different angles ...

Re: Is egg vegetarian or non-vegetarian? is milk also non-vegetarian

Milk and egg . Comeon my dear . Every processed food you think of now is somehow treated with some kind of animal extract .

Unless you make everything at home from scratch and not eat out at all , pure veggie is very hard to find .

But if you indeed want a classification , anything that is not killed before being eaten is considered a vegetarian .

A new-born baby will always sulk on its mother's milk . A pure vegetarian mother will also do that . If mother's milk is not considered non-vegetarian , same has to go with any milk-producing animal . Even cows are considered vegetarian even though they start on milk.

Eggs from poultry also cannot be considered non-vegetarian since it is not fertilized and hence cannot be considered living thing . So as per definition it has to be veggie.

The definition of vegetarian needs to be amended. The whole purpose (as I see it) for some religions banning meat is to avoid killing sentient beings with capacity of locomotion. Therefore, anything that can be derived from animals without killing or causing direct physical pain should be considered edible (indirect pain is there as no animal wants to give its body products away).

I am surprised that with education like yours, you get perplexed between multifarious definitions

Re: Is egg vegetarian or non-vegetarian? is milk also non-vegetarian

Egg is vegetarian because it is unfertilized by semen. Also, no pain is inflicted on egg when you make an omelet. So, it has to be vegetarian.
I think I am right; am i not?

by strict definition...anything that does not grow on plants is non-vegetarian. But, yes milk and unfertilized eggs are consistent with least violent diets
