a question about electricity

when you have an appliance such as TV plugged into socket/mains etc (and switched on)and are not using it, does it still cost you (like is it still using electricity or not)?
thanks
and if i keep on unplugging TV from socket, can it "break/damage" my TV?

if the appliance is on standby it will still use up electricity. most persons would consider the amount of electricity used negligible and not worth switching the appliance off for.

most modern equipment is meant to operate on standby. this should not ordinarily harm your electrical equipment.

switching off your TV and unplugging the cord every night is the first sign of madness.

power consumed= voltage X current

n voltage= current X resistance..

so to speak voltage is directly proportional to curent n resistance n from above equation it can be deuced that resistance is directly proportional to voltage n inversly to current..

now.....when the appliance is switched off......we call this circuit 'open circuit'...so theortically no electricity pases thru the circuit......now when resistance is large....n referring to above equations (no-2) ...current value is negligible n substituting it in power equation (no-1)n multiplying it with voltage...the total power consumed also becomes negligible... hope that solves ur query..

practically ur appliance is not taking up any power...resistance offered by the plug circuit, connecting wires, contribute to power intake which is so less that itz negligible

reg unlugging TV daily..

koi prob nahi hain.....voltage u get at homes is highly regulated n therez no chance of accidental surge in voltage values even if u plug in directly with switch turned on.....moreover every electronic appliance now comes with miniature circuit-breakers n in case of any short-circuit etc...if ur main fuse doesnt blow up...then the appliance's in-built fuse blows up.....in short...use the equipment at ur will

p.s- correct me if iem wrong....afaik....equations i've put r al corect....

vakil sahib: reason i do this is to minimise the "wastage" of electricity = saving of coal etc.
i even unplug PC at night. we have to look out for the nature/earth otherwise in future we will have difficulty so vakil sahib its not sign of maddness but consciousness!

that's a lot of hassle, dont you think?

standby works well and doesn't keep draining on your power meter as much as you think. you probably would be burning more calorie energy trying to unplug, re-plug the cords than what it would burn with standby

Vomi,

Electricity & water are somehow linked with each oher.. I know there are other possible ways to produce electricity. But why to waste it when you r not using it..

in our country still there are some villages where people haven't seen electricity ( imean light/bulb/tube). I think we should be very clear of switching OFF our appliances when they r not in use..
( no need to unplug it every time )

[color=blue] somehow nahi....water is a good conductor of electricity...yakeen nahi hota na..bathroom mein try karana...
....

relation kya hain boss ..aise to villages ne condom nahi dekhe...hum use karna band kar de kya??

I think we should be very clear of switching OFF our appliances when they r not in use..

chadh yaar.....appliance garam rehta hain...IC's josh mein rehti hain....tu bhi na

[/b]
i dunno what is the relation between switching off appliances n people not seeing/used electricity...in the absence of any storage device.....high cost of transmission infrastructure..n specially considering transmission losses...itz a crime not to use electricty to itz full potential .....electric supply to cable mein rahegi-rahegi.....tap nahi ki to bekar mein aise hi losses lene padenge....agar 1000MW ka station hain aur sirf 600 MW hi consumption hain...than plant will not run to it full capacity...yaani losses pe losses....main phir krhta hoon...in the anbsence of storage devices....use electricity at will....afteral u r paying for it....

soch na yaar....pehle zyada uranium rods lagati thi...ab kam...yaani nuclear fuel complex mein berozgari...order nahi aane se mining industry will be hit....kam order pahuchaane mein transport industry...state electricty board ko revenue kam....viruss yaar soch.........

Beta Vyomi,
Actually maine voh baat Natural sources save karane ke liye ki thi..

if the consumption of electricity is not upto full power it doesn't mean that keep you appliances ON continiuosly to make full use of power station.. After all electricity banane ke liye bhi kharcha hota hai. agar power consumption kam hai to instead of makin 1000MW try to reduce production which will surely save some money. This saved money can be used to make another power plant jaha per uski jyada jaroorat hai..

(don't misunderstand it.. nahi to tu bolega ki itne paise se plant nahi khulata.. )

abe production cost consumer se di gaye bills ( iem not talking abt illegal tapping of electricity) se kam hoti hain
kabhie socha hain.....production kam karane se kitni berozgaari badegi....fuel rods warehouse mein padh ke barbaad/sadh jayengi ( half-life ..or radiactive decay)....hazaro.n saal baad aadhi reh jayengi ..pata hain kitna loss hoga....aur mines mein bhi radioactive ore ka yahi chakkar....radiactivity ke hazards ki baat to chodo

... aur to aur pehle 4 hrs ka power cut hota tha.....ab 8hrs ka hoga ...ROFAL.....bhai mere..production kam mat karna tere plant ki....personal request hain
