Should Indian Cricket Team's Pakistan Tour Go Ahead?

That'll be like declaration that all is normal between two countries ...

India should not tour Pakistan, says MS Gill
12 Dec 2008, 1430 hrs IST, Times Now

NEW DELHI: Sports Minister MS Gill on Friday sent a strong message across the border by bluntly suggesting that the Indian cricket team's tour of
Pakistan should not go ahead in the wake of the terror attacks in Mumbai. He said it was not the right time to play cricket with Pakistan when "people from their soil were indulging in mass murder in India". ( Watch )

"Is it possible for one team to arrive in Mumbai and indulge in mass murder, and have another team go and play cricket in the winter afternoon sun at Lahore, immediately after," he said.

Gill said he was not in favour of the Indian team playing in Pakistan but it was upto the government to take a final decision. The Sports Minister's categorical comment came on a day when Pakistan Cricket Board's chairman Ejaz Butt is scheduled to meet ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat and BCCI officials at Chennai in a bid to salvage the series.

The Indian team is scheduled to play five ODIs, three Tests and a Twenty20 match during their January 6 to February 19 tour, subject to government clearance.

The Sports Minister said sporting contact meant to enhance friendship and the cricket series was not a commercial drama to go ahead under the surveillance of thousands of security personnel.

"I have played cricket. I know the spirit of cricket. Cricket is not commerce," he said, adding "sports contact is for enhancing friendship between human beings, above all neighbours," Gill said. He also felt commercial reasons could not be a factor in deciding the fate of the series.

India's junior hockey team, Champions Trophy and Australia's tour of Pakistan were among the prominent sporting events which were cancelled this year.

Gill said Pakistan should first promise that it would help the world to stop terrorism. "It requires those in authority in Pakistan to give a clear indication, satisfactory to the world, of doing everything possible to prevent such murderous incursion, and to root out the basis of it all," he said.

Meanwhile the BCCI had said that, it will follow the Union government's dictate on the forthcoming tour of Pakistan, and do whatever the government asks them to do as well. The BCCI's Chief of the Media Committee told TIMES NOW that the board will respect the decision of the Indian government on the tour.

Re: Should Indian Cricket Team's Pakistan Tour Go Ahead?

Only complete ingrates and non patriotic folks will want to see a India versus Pakistan match. Remember that every cricket match we play with Pak is like paying for a bomb and bullet to the terror organisations via the the Pakistan Cricket Board.

I just hope common sense prevails and our players themselves refuse any matches till Pakistan hands over our list of terrorists and most wanted list.

Re: Should Indian Cricket Team's Pakistan Tour Go Ahead?

I dont think in our lifetime we will see pakistan handing India even one from the list of most wanted terrorists we have provided.

Even if they do,we should not play with pakistan and break all ties with them.

Re: Should Indian Cricket Team's Pakistan Tour Go Ahead?

Don't make playing Cricket an issue at all. Say that we will not go because of security concerns . We will also not play at neutral venue for one year. We can do so because our BCCI has too much money. We can do a season of Twnty-Twenty and recover all the money we lost becaus eof Pakistani tour . How ever we will play in ICCI championships like World Cups and Championship Trophy .

We should not react emotionally to this. This will give scope to lot of emotional blabber and we will not be able to insulate from Pakistan.

What do u mean emotional blabber? Its this fucking obsession with cricket with Pakistan that we allowed so many pakistanis to come to India to see cricket. Govt, accepts that 50% have not gone back and have disappeared. How will playing cricket not insulate us from Pak??

I mean the same thing Charcha Pai. People like Sharukh Khan,Mahesh Bhatt, some Ex-Cricketers all dying to play with Pakistan. These guys can't live without Pakistan and also don't move to Pakistan to bless us.

Forget about War,even Cricket gives Pakistan an opportunity to take it as proof of Mughal superiority while apna Pandus except the new ones play for salary only . We should avoid giving any platform to pakistanis where they can unite. Cricket is one. We should avoid such Emotional Entanglements whether positive or negative with Pakistan.
