Time to update your skills and diversify...

On seeing the financial turmoil in US and its effect on overall world economy in form of layoffs etc, some of my juniors ask me how is it going to affect them in the long run.

I just tell them, it won't affect you much, if you keep updating your skills, and not just sticking with what you are good at. Your skills should be according to your next project and rather than trying to look for projects/employment matching your skills. So diversify your skills and don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Is that a good advice? What say you?

That depends. You are advising jack of all trades versus master of one. If your skillset is reasonably marketable, dont diversify. Instead specialize.

If your skillset is not marketable or the market keeps changing, then by all means diversify. If nothing else, the fake resume would at least appear to be real.

I agree ... that in essence is what I told them too and that is what I meant by skills update... I mean in any project we will be using mostly a few aspects of the technology while others lay dormant (and in books/manuals and may be made use of in other projects)... it is better to draw a full circle on them, before getting ready for the next interview...

I believe certain new technologies will see projects winding up because of budget... people may do good having had one of their legs firmly in good old technologies...

and it is better to learn related technologies to our core skill set rather than trying to put efforts on a new topic that goes tangent to what we know...

Re: Time to update your skills and diversify...

how should one keep updating skills if there's no scope at your workplace to build desirable skill set? for example, I know ETL pretty well and want to venture a bit into data warehouse design and Informatica... so how to learn and show on resume' ? ? ?

That is impossible. You can never be prepared enough, but you can always fool yourself and others into believing that in favorable conditions

For that you need have some experience to back you...

Never keep just 1 resume. I have 3 versions of my resume each highlighting one domain area while also telling that I have skills in the other domains. This helps to keep the focus on that particular domain that will help you grab a position in project requiring skills in that domain, without confusing the recruiter... That is how I manage my skills according to the next project. I call it matching a project to one of my skill sets (while the recruiter does his job matching my skill set to the project )

Of course, this requires you to have considerable experience of having worked on multiple technology domains which means you must have more than a half a decade of experience to back your claims.
