Scandals from the past which shaped Indias future...

... and how they shaped our nations history and future. Let us dedicate this thread to all stories/folklore of scandals from the past. These scandals can be of any nature, not necessarily sexual, although I would like to start this thread with one!

Here is scandal no 1. (Year 1978)

Most of you must be knowing or at least heard of, Jagjivan Ram, the longest serving parliamentarian and dalit deputy prime minister of yester years. He was to become the PM of India and would have probably put an end to Nehru clan and the rampant Nehru-Gandhi sycophancy which we witness today. But a sex scandal involving son, which even in this day would have shocked the popular conscience and would rival the porno stuff that goes on internet, put an end to his political career. And Maneka Gandhi daringly published those infamous photos in her newspaper Satya as a bid to blemish Jagjivan Ram who then was a strong competitor for the top post to her mother-in-law Indira Gandhi

Here is what happened...

A tale of sex and politics!
Vijay Soni

The sex scandal featuring Suresh Ram, the son of the then Defence Minister, Babu Jagjivan Ram had a sinister and seamy side too. It was, as experts say, a scathing political vendetta launched against Jagjivan Ram, the then Defence Minister in Morarji Desai's cabinet.
Narrating the mood of the time, Inder Malhotra, the eminent journalist says, "It was a transitional phase in Indian polity. Congress was defeated in the general elections in 1977 and Janata Dal, a coalition of loosely connected elements came to power. Within the Janata Dal, there was intense rivalry. Morarji Desai, Charn Singh and Jagjivan Ram, each vying for No. 1 slot, trying to undercut each other."

It was under these political circumstances, the photograph of Suresh Ram in compromising positions with a girl called Sushma Chaudhury decorated the central-spread of a monthly magazine called Surya. Maneka Gandhi, daughter-in-law of Indira Gandhi was the editor of the magazine.
"The photographs came to us also. But we refused to publish it. It was sleazy and in bad taste", say Inder Malhotra who was associated with one of the English dailies. "It was politically motivated and a bad game to be trapped in", adds Mr. Malhotra.
Politicians have often used sex scandals of their rivals to achieve their goals. But in case of Suresh Ram, the distinctive feature was, "He was neither a political figure nor a public personality. But Jagjivan Ram's detractors exploited Suresh Ram's philandering to the hilt", observes Mr. Malhotra.
The issue rocked the nation and it ended Jagjivan Ram's ambition to become India's Prime Minister. Prithvis Chakravorty, another eminent journalist who lived the moments of the time says, "Jagjivan Ram was a strong contender for Prime Ministership, and especially because his pre-election defection from Indira Gandhi had helped Janata Party formed government in 1977."
It was the time India forayed into political experiment, dumping Congress and electing Janata Dal to power. This was the first time; a non-Congress government was elected to power.
The change of vanguards also witnessed intense political conspiracy, personality clashes and deceits among top political leaders of the time.
A sulking Indira Gandhi who had tasted defeat for the first time in her career was desperate to seize power. The Janata Dal government, on the other hand was busy framing charges against her. They had only one agenda - to avenge the wrongdoings of Emergency and snub Mrs Gandhi's political career for future.
It was Janata Dal's internal dissention that gave Mrs. Gandhi a golden opportunity to play her cards. Janata Dal, which came to power in February 1977, was fundamentally a conglomeration of disparate elements of Congress dissidents, Morarji Desai, Jagjivan Ram, Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna (Congress For Democracy), Old Bhartiya Jan Sangh members like Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Socialist George Fernandes, Chandrasekhar, Mohan Dharia and Krishan Kant and Charan Singh of Bhartiya Kranti Dal.

Players in the sexcapade
Suresh Ram:

Around 40 years old in 1978, Suresh Ram was the philandering son of the then Defence Minister Jagjivan Ram and is belived to have made the maximum use of his fathers political connections.
Suresh Ram died at the age of 46 of a heart attack.
Sushma Chaudhary:

A student of Satyawati College, she belonged to a lower middle class Jat family. Her father handled the procurement of wood at Nigambodh Ghat.
According to Sushma, she married Suresh Ram and stayed with him till he died in 1986. After his death, says Sushma she was not treated by the family as she would have desired and considered it best to leave.
We withhold the details of her whereabouts as it is not our motive to intrude into or infringe upon somebody's personal life.
KC Tyagi:

Gen Secy, Yuva Janata in 1978 and considered to be Choudhary Charan Singh's man. He was one of the main accused in the Suresh Ram abduction case but was later granted bail by the judge as there were glaring contradictions in the charges against him.
Delhi High Court judge RN Aggarwal who stated that the FIR had been lodged after inordinate delay (Aug 23) and the photographs were not taken under duress.
He was also among those who got the photos distributed in all the media offices and all over the town.
In 1978 KC Tyagi was a young man of 27 trying to make a place for himself in politics. He was the general secretary of the Yuva Janata Party and a close ally of Chaudhary Charan Singh. Today he has moved up on the political ladder. Considered to be close to Sharad Yadav, the JD (U) chief, he is the general secretary of Janata Dal.
He was also a one time MP from the JD (U) and has served a stint with Mulayam Singhs Samajwadi Party.

Om Pal Singh:

He was the office secretary of the Kisan Sammelan in 1978. A close aide of Chaudhary Charan Singh he originally belonged to Huseri, Meerut. He was among the prime accused in abducting Suresh Ram. Along with KC Tyagi he also helped in the distribution of the photographs.
Om Pal Singh later retired to his village and took up farming.
AP Singh:

Among the three main people who assaulted Suresh Ram, he turned a court witness later. He has a house in Varanasi and Patna.

Behind the scenes

KHUSHWANT SINGH

I was editor of the National Herald in 1978. We were not paid any salary then as the Congress was short on funds. Indira Gandhi was out of power after the Emergency debacle swept the Janata Party to power.
Her daughter-in-law Maneka Gandhi had started a magazine called Surya and Indira Gandhi asked me to help her out with the magazine.
Earlier Amteshwar Anand, Maneka's mother who claimed to be my distant relative had personally visited me at my residence with Indira Jaising and sought my help for Maneka's magazine Surya.
One fine Sunday morning, an important day for a sardar as he has to wash his hair that day, they arrived unannounced draped in chiffon and perfume only to be greeted by me in a sardarji's kachcha (underwear) with my hair, a tangled mane, wet and streaming open.
They requested me to help Maneka with the magazine she was planning to launch Surya. I relented.
I worked with Surya as the consulting editor and would invariably end up writing or rewriting all the stories.
One day when I reached the National Herald office, I saw an envelope lying on my table. I opened the envelope, had one look and recognised who was in the picture.
Suresh Ram, son of Jagjivan Ram.
If the Kamasutra has 64 poses of making love, this one certainly had 10.
By evening, an interesting development took place. An emissary arrived from Jagjivan Ram saying that if the pics were not published, Jagjivan Ram would dump Morarjee and join Indira Gandhi. I took the pictures to Indira Gandhi and showed them to her.
I conveyed the message to Indira Gandhi and she said: "First ask him to dump Morarjee and then only will I guarantee the pictures will not be published". It never happened. Maneka was very keen to use the pics in her magazine Surya.
And so the pics got published as a centrespread in Surya and were also published by the National Herald. We had to use tapes on strategic body organs. They were so graphic that we could be sued for obscenity. And all these pictures had been organized by Suresh Ram who had a self timed Polaroid camera placed in his room.
Suresh and his father Jagjivan were great womanisers. They often used to share their women between them.
Years later, Maneka took me to court because I wrote about her in my book. She held up the release of my book for six years on charges of invasion of privacy when she herself published the pictures!

Inside story of Suresh's porno pranks

(This is an extract from Rajinder Puri's story published in Blitz on September 2, 1978. Rajinder Puri is a journalist who contributes regularly to the political weekly Outlook )

Satyawati college in New Delhi where Sushma Chaudhary was a student in the Political Science Dept.

New Delhi has been rocked by an incident concerning MrSuresh Kumar, son of defence minister Jagjivan Ram in which figured a staged abduction and pornographic photographs involving Mr Kumar and a Delhi university under graduate student, Ms Sushma Chaudhary. The incident has evoked mixed reactions. Sources close to the defence minister have suggested a frame up and a political blackmail; Mr Raj Narain, former health minister has spoken about the purity of morals in public life; and the prime minister is reported to be determined to treat the matter as a criminal case and nothing else.
In certain circles, there is serious discussion about whether, at the end of the crisis, Mr Jagjivan Ram will continue in the cabinet. At the very least, observers note, Mr Suresh Kumar should forthwith shift from his father's house. Mr Kumar might earn the distinction of being yet another son who will have blighted the political career of his parent.
What started as an alleged sex frolic involving Suresh Kumar and developed into a brawl with some youths, including an office secretary of Kisan Sammelan Mr Om Pal Singh, and a general secretary of the Yuva Janata, Mr KC Tyagi, is gradually becoming an affair curiouser and curiouser.
In the FIR lodged by Mr Suresh Kumar, it is said that he and the young lady accompanying him in his car (a Mercedes, ownership yet to be established) were intercepted by two DLY taxis in which ten people armed with revolvers were seated, and then forcibly driven towards Loni in Uttar Pradesh. Mr Kumar has alleged that in a building in Modi Nagar he and the lady in question were forced to sign certain letters. According to newspaper reports, Mr Kumar has alleged in his FIR that he was beaten up and rendered unconscious.

The bus stop close to Jamuna Bazar from where Suresh Ram used to pick up Sushma Chaudhary.

Subsequently, when Mr Kumar and the lady were releasedby their captors, Mr Om Pal, according to this version, taunted Mr Kumar that they had taken photographs of the lady and him in a compromising position. According to this version, Mr Kumar must have been unconscious when the photographs were allegedly taken. Mr Kumar had been picked up by his captors according to this version, around 10.30 pm from Nigambodh Ghat near his lady friend's house, was released around 3.00 am, and reached on the
morning of August 21.
Driving back in the mystery Mercedes, Mr Kumar reportedly had an accident near Ghaziabad, and therefore must have been considerably delayed.
It would be a reasonable inference, from Mr Kumar's allegation, from the entirely unwanted secrecy surrounding the investigation by the police, and from the manner itself of the investigation and the interrogation, that the objective with which the police had been entrusted had been limited - in the first instance, to recover the compromising letters and the photographs which had allegedly been obtained under duress from Mr Kumar.
Reportedly, Miss Chaudhary in her statement recorded on August 26 was forthright, that she and Mr Kumar posed under duress for pornographic photographs. Miss Chaudhary did not plead unconsciousness.
Till the moment of writing, despite the alleged third degree methods by the police against the taxi driver and Messrs Om Pal Singh and Tyagi, who were arrested on the morning of August 25, the police do not seem to have succeeded in their objective. But why should the procurement of the photographs be of such prime importance if they had been taken under duress.

Sushma a femme fatale?
Vijay Soni

Although Suresh Ram's sex scandal has faded away from people's memory, the mystery shrouding the torrid love affair remains unresolved. There are questions that still haunt those who knew what conspired during 1970s, both politically and in the lives of Suresh Ram and Sushma Chaudhary. Was the sex scandal a cover-up to the larger scheme of things? Was Sushma a mere pawn, a victim or a greater beneficiary of largesse? Or, a femme fatale for whom Suresh Ram fell for?
It was August-September, 1978. 21-year-old Sushma Chaudhury, a student of Satyawati College, Delhi was introduced to 46-year-old Suresh Ram, son of the then Defence Minister Jagjivan Ram by some common friend. No one knows who these common friends were.
According to one version Sushma was a frequent hitchhiker and often used to take free rides to college. It is in this process, she met some influential people who introduced her to Suresh Ram.
A young girl then, Sushma was known for her beauty and was the talk of the locality. Ambitious, confident and upwardly mobile, she was out to make her mark.
"Sushma was stunningly beautiful. It's no surprise that Suresh Ram developed a fancy for her", says Ravinder Singh, a neighbour who runs a shop.
"The affairs of Sushma and Suresh used to be on everyone's tongue in those days. All knew it. Suresh Ram often used to come here to pick her up, often on ode-hours and sometimes drunk", recalls Ravinder Singh.
Suresh Ram, as sources close to his family claim was having an unhappy married life and found in Sushma, an easy emotional anchor. Their relationship grew stronger and as Sushma's relatives claim they got married. This despite the fact that Suresh Ram was already married and had not obtained divorce from his first wife.
"Jagjivan Ram had honorably accepted the marriage", says Kamlesh Chaudhary, sister-in-law of Sushma. And the couple was living along with Jagjivan Ram in his 6 Krishna Menon Marg official bungalow.
But there are questions that lingers. The bonding Suresh Ram and Sushma shared cannot be put above suspicion, this especially because of huge age-difference and difference in the economic status.
Neither was Sushma, brilliant by any account. Was then she used as an implant to serve Charan Singh's political design? Or it was Suresh Ram who was enamored by her charm?

Photos of Suresh Ram humping Sushma Chowdhary (please remember these are from 1978, and Suresh Ram was evidently a voyeurist and must have certainly owned a private porno collection, in the absence of internet in those days!

Re: Scandals from the past which shaped Indias future...

[Picture] Here we see Suresh Ram (at the time married and 40 years old), with his paramor Sushma Chaudhary, a 21 years old woman from a lower middle class Jat family. Now, do we think that this is wrong? Of course not. A dalit has as much right to indulge in sexual pleasure as anyone else. Unfortunately we can not say the same for sons of ministers who misappropriate public funds and use their position to splurge on their girlfriends. Incidentally they used to rendezvous at the Western Court to which Suresh had access despite being a political non-entity.

[Picture] We like this one even better, the woman astride position. Here we see an upper-caste Sushma riding the dalit scion Suresh Ram. Did you say ironical? Well, that's what we had in mind.

[Picture] How about this one? Looks like here Sushma is doing a sideways straddle. As Kushwant Singh put it then, "If the Kamasutra has 64 poses of making love, this one certainly had 9." Apparently Suresh himself used a polaroid camera to take the pictures. Legend has it that he was a bonafide voyeur and it can be safely assumed he had quite a portfolio before this one. Remember, this is the days before the internet, so people had to make their own porn library.

[Picture] I am sure you knew this one was coming, didn't you? Some people smell a rat in the bonding between a married 40 year old and a 21 year old young woman. We like to think that there was no coercion involved. However, we don't rule out the effect expensive cars and gifts are known to have on women. For us die hard romantics, the source of Suresh Ram's riches is not that important.

[Picture] Here is further proof that their relationship was built on equality. Suresh Ram is seen returning the favor in this picture.

All in all, we believe this was a sweet love affair. I know that there are many "where they are now" type of questions in your mind. Well, unfortunately Suresh Ram died at the age of 46. Sushma went into hiding, and the newspapers have stopped hounding her. This scandal killed Jagjivan Ram's political career. It is not clear whether Suresh Ram had subsequently married Sushma. Sushma claimed he did.

Note: pictures were taken from Hindustan Times archives and digitally enhanced using GIMP, mainly to invert the negative images to enhance their clarity.

In just two phrases, unknowingly, you opened up an entirely new chapter of debate: Are orgasms physical or mental...!!

So correct.... Life is too short to read all words in a long article.... The article should be read like a 'picture'.... See and feel its content in and out...

It should have been considered scandal if that Suresh had been 'caught' with kids, corpses or animals.
Why bother about what happens between two consenting adults?

Congi trap.

Indira Gandhi destroyed Jagjivan Ram's image with this triviality. Thank Goodness for the internet, otherwise our minds would have still been hostage by this 'media.'
