MS Windows calculator

Try this:

Open the calculator in your windows pc
press Alt + 2 or click view & then scientific
type this in the calculator: 4 square root (returns 2) and then - 2 =
And the answer will shock you.. one would expect a 0

Am I doing something wrong? Or is MS Calculator not tested well enough?

Re: MS Windows calculator

It is almost zero. The calculator seems to be reading the movie ratings in the PC and if it finds more precision ratings like 4.762 of 6, it will also return 'about zero'

Re: MS Windows calculator

This piece of code for square roots and cube roots is probably referenced everywhere in MS' products installed on your PC. I'm guessing that it calculates the square root of 4 as 1.99999 (many decimal digits) but can't display it so says 2 and so when you subtract 2 it gives you an infinitesimally small number -ve number close to 0. But that is just wrong.

I did a search on the net and it seems this has been around for a good 4 or 5 years.

Re: MS Windows calculator

This is probably because the program is written in VB and this is an inherent problem of that language. Been there for years, from the old QBasic days
