Infosys plans at least three new banking software products under Finacle

Anirban Sen, ET Bureau Apr 21, 2015, 05.30AM IST

BENGALURU: Infosys is planning to build at least three new banking software products under the Finacle umbrella, carry out a rebranding exercise for the core banking product and double the unit's investments in the United States where it is attempting to increase its footprint, as unit head Michael Reh looks to boost revenue growth.

As part of the strategy under Reh, who also heads EdgeVerve, India's second largest software exporter will also beef up the unit with fresh recruitment at the middle level, including another product development head, to strengthen the unit at a time when it is looking to build new products, at least three people familiar with the matter said.

Infosys, which is also in the process of hiring several banking consultants, and new sales and marketing executives, has already hired several top and mid-level executives at Finacle over the past three-four months from companies including SAP and Microsoft. These include Venkatesh Vaidyanathan, who joined Infosys after spending nearly eight years at SAP and has been designated vice president of product management at Finacle.

"Reh wants to carry out an important rebranding exercise for Finacle. The rebranding will be important in the sense that a lot of financial customers who know about Infosys don't know much about Finacle, so it's a very crucial exercise," said one of the people, who did not wish to be named.

The new line of products that Infosys plans to build under the Finacle umbrella will leverage, among others, the API (application programming interface) economy, banking-asa-service and the BlockChain database, which is the platform on which virtual currency Bitcoin is built, the people said. However, Finacle's plan to leverage Blockchain is at a "very early, conceptual stage", said another person.

Infosys is also in the process of putting in place a new incentive scheme to reward top sales and marketing executives at the unit. Executives will be rewarded according to the number of licences they manage to sell to customers, with top performers potentially receiving about 1.2 times the variable component of their salaries.

Reh is attempting to swiftly turn around the fortunes of the struggling unit, which currently generates about $300 million in annual revenue and employs more than 6,000 people, by increasing investments in key potential markets such as the US, where Finacle is barely present. Finacle's largest market is Asia.

Reh took over Finacle late last year, after Infosys chief executive and former SAP products chief Vishal Sikka brought him from SAP SE as part of a drive to strengthen and revive Infosys' products and platforms business.

Under Sikka's directive, most employees at Finacle are currently undergoing training in newer areas of technology and also going through design thinking courses. "There is a sense within Infosys that it is in a lot of areas with such huge potential, but it hasn't been leveraged.

And they're not wasting any time trying to implement some of the newer strategies that have been unlike anything that Infosys has ever attempted before," said Don Free, research vice president at technology research firm Gartner. Elements of Finacle's new strategy are expected to be announced over the coming weeks.

"We've seen Finacle before from a product perspective, but now we're starting to see things more from a services perspective that ties into Finacle. And that's the part that is really different," added Free.

Infosys did not respond to an email that was sent a week ago. The company is currently in a so-called silent period ahead of its results announcement later this week.

Exclamation Finacle is a dark horse!

Finacle is a dark horse! Finacle is leading a silent revolution but is keeping an extremely low profile.

Most of India’s nationalized banks use Finacle.

Finacle is an excellent banking product, which serves significant number of clients over the world and rated as 'Best in Class' product.

Finacle is the most common application used across banks in India.

It's developed by Infosys and provides not just Core Banking facilities but add-on services for overall banking purposes.

The significance of Finacle is that it helps to work on a single window solution for large, complex and real-time banking needs.

I have worked on Finacle briefly and found the new menu with lesser dependence on remembering keywords to be a great improvement.

In many senses, Infosys is better than Microsoft.
