Re: Suggestions for a laptop

Get one online (Amazon, Paytm) and get a local computerwala to do the installation for you. Acer has good budget laptops, am using one since 1.5 years now, bought from Paytm (they had a 20% cashback that time).

Re: Suggestions for a laptop

Been using this Acer laptop since about 2 yeas now 15-16 hours/day and no problems with it. IMO almost all the branded laptops are of good quality, I wouldn't recommend a second-hand one.

Re: Suggestions for a laptop

My suggestion is to buy a yoga notebook with touchscreen, if budget permits.

Re: Suggestions for a laptop

I would not go for a refurbished one and I dont like Dell.

Yoga series look good but need feedback from users.

Also would not want to order it online as I want demo before buying so would prefer going to hypercity and such stores.

I need suggestions about hardware in current laptops, processor speed, ram etc

For an average desktop, processor i3 5th generation or 6th generation is good enough. Don't know how i5 4th generation stacks up against that. 4GB RAM and 1TB hdd is good enough. Don't know about processor speeds because different processor types claiming different speeds.

You could do jagguji style - See a Demo in a store and if you like it, buy it online. Plus, all the dabbas look good in the beginning.

Anyway, my own experience when i was trying to buy a Laptop and i was In India. My freind who was in Lenovo shared his employee discount id. He also suggested (in 2008) - "Go for tablet computers - they are cool". At that time, it meant computers with touchscreen which would also fold completely.

I was trying to get what seemed to be the up to date hardware (Core2Duo was in those days dont remember the RAM). Another thing he suggested was there is not much difference between buying in India and buying from Umrika (but Dollar was in 40s those days).

So, ultimately i was checking where i could get the cheapest core2Duo with RAM and settled on a Dell Inspiron. I thought i would also support a bit of Make in India as Dell had a factory in Hosur, but looks like what i ordered came from China.
I ordered it online, but some lady from Dell kept calling me* and kept me in loop on the order plus i had to sign or so in a couple of places. ALso, some one came home and set up the dabba.
It worked well for the few months before i went to a phoren trip but after i came back its performance had slowed down. Also, its battery went down after some time. But probably if you use it carefully it works (as it did under my watch).

in terms of longevity one brand which works methinks is Toshiba. One Toshiba laptop though low in hardware, withstood my 2 boys for 2 years until one tripped over the power chord and the screen broke.

*i was a bit busy with my toddler then, but you could use this opportunity also and check if you could do some 'setting'

Re: Suggestions for a laptop

I am no big fan of Dell because it slows down over time and a common complain with Dell users is battery life.
Agree with Toshiba,Japanese product are always the best.
I had been using Compaq for last many years but with HP take over its no longer of the same quality.
Something like this looks good but would want SST drive.
  • CPU: Intel® CoreTM i7-7500U Processor
  • RAM: 8GB (DDR4 2133)
  • Storage: 2TB 9.5MM 5400RPM
  • Graphic Card: NVIDIA® GeForce® 940MX 2 GB / 4 GB (Optional)

Realized now that lower rupee would actually make buying Laptops in India even more attractive.

Wow !! With that kind of budget you would have a lot of choice, didn't realize that you meant 70k when you mentioned "average" budget. I thought you meant something like 30k.

Anyway, what is SST drive ?

I think he meant Solid State drive.

Swamiji, stretch it a bit and you could land up with a Macbook Pro

Sorry its SSD,typo maaf
SSD or solid state drive is an electronic hardisk which saves data on a flash type drive rather then metal platters which typical HDD saves on.
An SSD has no moving parts, so it is more likely to keep data safe in the event of drop or the laptop is shaken by an earthquake or shock while it's operating. So you get durability at a price Another plus point is that its fast so your system boots up in seconds compared to minutes with traditional HDD.

are you looking for specs just to have a future proof laptop or do you have specific requirements?
