Thumbs up

well ...

Soccer fans in the US will not miss a game. All 2002 World Cup matches will be televised with 17 matches live on ESPN, 46 live on ESPN2 and a minimum of nine on ABC Sports, including the live telecast of the Final from Yokohama, Japan, Sunday, June 30 at 7 a.m.

ESPN and ESPN2 will re-air at least nine of the live telecasts later in the day. ESPN/ESPN2 will also feature all U.S. Men's National Team first round matches from Korea beginning with U.S. versus Portugal (Wednesday, June 5 at 5 a.m. ET); against host Korea (Monday, June 10 at 2:30 a.m. ET); and against Poland (Friday, June 14 at 7:30 a.m. ET).

Due to the TV times, employers of die hard soccer fans can expect a lot of requests for sick leave during the month of June!

Re: FIFA world cup!

Using this to post my memories of the older world cups.

82 - They used to show some soccer on the DD in the evenings instead of ususal Krishi darshan and others. towards the end realized it was world cup and heard from my Bengali Friend the name Paolo Russi

86 - watched some matches this time but was not really following it. Heard the names of Platini and Maradona

90 - This was the first one i really followed - There was an interesting start where Cameroon defeated Argentina with a great header by Oman Biyik or some such name. One more name which became famous was Roger Milla. 2 notable matches are - Argenitna Defeating Brazil in the Semi FInal with a goal by Cannigia on a pass by Maradona. One more thing was that in the half time of this match, the cameras briefly zoomed in on a topless spectator (female that is). The other Semi between England and Germany was also thrilling.
Another Bong colleague told later on that this was the first taste of live international football many Bongs got and after seeing these, they stopped watching East Bengal and Mohan Bagan matches

94 - Dont remember too much except for Romario. The amusing part is that after Brazil won, there were victory celebrations in Calcutta!

98 - Only things i remember are Zidanne and the Vive Le cup by Ricky Martin

2002 - I was actually watching the Final in a Chennai Bar and all the Indians there were supporting Brazil. THere were a few Firangs who were supporting Germany (so guess they were Germans)
