Thumbs up The Departed - Just Amazing

Of Rats and Moles ………….Here we go

The Departed , directed by Martin Scorsese is an intense and thrilling drama, which is set in Boston.

Frank Costello
(Jack Nicholson) is the boss of the most powerful mob, the Superstar of organized crime within the Boston City limits. So naturally the Massachusetts State police want to get their hands on him. So, in they send a rookie Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio), who has had a troubled past, and whose family, apart from his dad have been involved in the organized crime scene themselves. So Billy goes undercover to infiltrate Frank Costello’s organization, and manages to do so quite successfully. Unaware to the State police Frank has a mole in the force, another rookie Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon), who is a rising star with the Special Investigation Unit.

The Supporting cast includes Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, Vera Farmiga, Anthony Anderson and Alec Baldwin.

Back to the main characters; Billy, a strong silent and vulnerable type of guy is successful in infiltrating Frank’s gang and is soon strung along for a lot of ‘Jobs’ carried out. Colin on the other hand is the confident sassy cop who rises up the ranks with amazing speed, moves to a prime neighborhood, dates the department psychiatrist and is the prime source of information about the State police, within the State Police, for Frank Costello. Both Cops become aware of each others existence sometime into the movie and thus begins the game of CAT and MOUSE with an AMAZING ending.

The Plot is dramatic to say the least. And the moviegoer will be strung along for a long ride (2 ˝ hrs) without being aware, though I must admit, I felt the movie did drag a little, inching towards the Climax.

The Screenplay is sensational, flows like water; the dialogues are edgy, witty, smart and NOT FOR CHILDREN !! The movie is all about Class, Loyalty, Family, Friendship, the battle between Good and Evil and Violence of course.

The Climax is a different thing all together, you will not see it coming, you will be shocked, you will be sad, and you will be happy, you’ll laugh; all the emotions tightly packed and tastefully handled. But don’t expect a certain ending; don’t expect anything; except to be blown away ! There is a hint for you!!!

Now to the performances, I’ll just deal with them in the order of preference. Jack Nicholson , need I say more? He is shrewd, intense, heartless and lethally funny. The BOSS, the one who you never cross!! Jack Nicholson is synonymous with great performances, and his portrayal in this movie can be deemed as one of this recent finest.

Leonardo DiCaprio
plays Billy a rookie who goes undercover, learns the workings of the mafia and collects evidence to incriminate Frank. Unfortunately in the process, he is put thru both physical and mental pain, unable to bear the burden seeks mental help and in the process falls in love with the psychiatrist, who interestingly is Colin’s (Matt Damon) girlfriend. His mission puts him thru danger and almost wipes clean his identity and he faces the enemy all alone.

Matt Damon
plays the bad cop, the rat, stinky (not literally) shrewd who is Frank’s mole within the State Police. He does a pretty good job in helping Frank not getting caught and still somehow maintaining his credibility within the department so much so that he is regarded the star.
The supporting cast is stellar too and without them the movie would not be this good. In fact I agree with a lot of critics that are terming this movie an INSTANT CLASSIC

I will say no more about the movie except state the fact that this is a movie that is sure a crowd pleaser, and holds the audience in a state of rapt attention and absolute delight. So go, get out there and watch it and let me know what you think !

Re: The Departed - Just Amazing

This is one movie I plan to go to the cinemas and watch for sake of Jack Nicholson!

Please do not reveal the suspense as this movie is supposed to be a Godfather plus a Hitchcock suspense thriller.

Re: The Departed - Just Amazing

This is a remake of a Japanese movie that I saw a few months ago, and if it is half as well made as the original, it is a classic Yup, the ending... it sure was mind-blowing in the original... and with the star-cast in this one, I will definitely be watching it... when it comes on DVD

Re: The Departed - Just Amazing

Liked the movie - but i think you can wait for it to come on DVD to see it.. no need to waste $18.50 @ theatre (assuming you are gonna go with some one).

lots of shooting - lots of graphic obscenities (referencing c*nt, periods and various other items related to female genitalia) - good movie - but a little too long and a little too intense.. I mean in a movie like this - the dialog is everything (any movie with jack nicholson is intense) - found myself straining to take all the smartypants dialog delivery and ended up getting a crick in the neck and the ass

get the DVD instead and pause/play subtitle/ paap caarn and enjaay

cheers

In that case, you will be disappointed with this one, Laalgothra pai. This is a regular cops & robbers, guns & knives, drugs & daaru thriller, no kungfu special effects. I don't think Martin Scorcese would have the courage to add that to an original movie that did not have it.

Dont call it kungfu spesal fects you uninitiated chinaman .....I am talking himgiri ka veer..its the mother of all flying kathakalis...and you calling it kung phu?thooooooooooooo thu......yeh to phir se sher ho gaya munshi ji....

If it doesnt have that then whats the point..scorcese ho ya Satyajit Ray...China/Jaapu-dance is king...whats the fun if you just going to get drunk and fire a pistol in all directions...if you cant even toss an apple 15 feet in the air and chop it into 150 slivers with your pony tail after you are drunk...whats the point of a movie?in Himgiri ka veer a guy would get drunk on rice starch and chop up a grape into red wine in 5 minutes...and get more drunk on that wine...

you people need an education in art and action...

(Not to take away from martin scorsese or the entertainment this movie provides)

What does this movie have, that you need to watch it in theatre?. I can understand matrix type movies (special fx), gladiator/ benhur type epics which are must-see's in theatre..

But this movie ?

does the movie have car chases ? does it have special fx ? does it have computer generated graphics ? I'm just wondering why you'd think this movie can't be enjoyed on DVD or why you would derive more enjoyment from watching it on big screen..

just a curious quecchan...

Re: The Departed - Just Amazing

Well I was mistaken when I said it was a Japanese movie remake. The original is "Internal Affairs" from Hong Kong (which would make it a chinese movie). The story is a drama and so, well suited to DVD. There are no big-budgeted scenes in the original, just lots of thrilling twists and turns in the plot. The character build-up is great. Don't know what Scorcese put in, for american tastes.

Thumbs up Re: The Departed - Just Amazing

Saw this movie today. Superbly crafted edge of the seat thriller based on the Boston Mafia.

Jack Nicholson stars excellently as the canny & remorseless gang lord Frank Costello, who trusts undercover cop Billy Costigan (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) who in turn infiltrates the ranks of his gang & passes on vital information to his cop bosses (Mark Wahlberg & Martin Sheen). Matt Damon stars as Colin Sullivan the dirty cop who is the mole deputed by Frank Costello in the Boston Police department.

The movie ends with betrayals, redemption & a lot of skull shattering bullets.

Though remade from a Hongkong Chinese movie, I would rate this as another winner by Martin Scorcese. Ranks among the best movies directed by Martin Scorsese after Taxi Driver, Goodfellas & Casino.
