Laptop password lockout

How do you retrieve your password if you are locked out of your laptop and if the hint doesn't help? My friend is locked out of his laptop and he's in obvious agony over this. Do you know a way? Please help.

Re: Laptop password lockout

If your friend does have admininstrator password, then it's not a big deal. You would just put in XP/Vista CD, go into recovery console and be able to log in. Follow the petri link.

If you don't have root password, that's where the trouble comes in.
There are apparently a few password recovery tools out there. But they may or may not work. In addition, it takes a long time. Strongly discouraged.
Easiest thing is to take the hard disk out, put it preferably into a PC as a slave, recover your data first. Data comes first. Everything else including reinstalling comes second.

There are two types of connectors, IDE and SATA. Most of today's laptops and PCs use SATA. So connection is not such a big problem. Another difference, if you really care, is the size of the disk. A laptop disk is smaller than PC sized disks, so it will not fit PC rack. But our concern is only to copy the data, so you can let it loose for a few minutes until you copy your data from laptop disk to PC.Then reinstall the OS on laptop.

What Ravi said may require some technical knowledge for you to be able to open up the PC and hook up the hard drive.

Another option for novices would be to buy a 2.5" HDD Enclosure. An enclosure is basically a case for hard drive; you plug the hard drive to the case using the connector inside the case, and connect the case to your PC using USB cable. It now acts like an external hard drive. Enclosures cost around $10-20 depending on the brand, quality, etc. Make sure you get the right one: IDE or SATA (or PATA or DATA or POTA or TADA or BATA).

You also get adapters to connect from one type to the other. I have a universal adapter to connect to all the types mentioned above. I am willing to sell it to you for 750$. Let me know if you need one. You can use paypal to pay me.

I am yet to see anyone opening his laptop... not that nobody has done that yet ...but my guess is that would require some technical knowledge.

Okay I take it back... pardon my ignorance. Please don't follow my advice.

Thanks for the heads up
