Lottery - Patricia Woods

Ok, so we have a mentally retarded young man (ok, ok...not restarted but slow - since his iq is 76 which is officially not retarded but slow), who strikes it rich...millionaire rich...who has a mother figure who gives him the instructions on life....and who at the end gets the girl of his dream. No sir, its not Forrest Gump - its the book by Patricia Woods called 'Lottery'.

So despite being awfully similar to Forrest Gump, I loved the book. Forrest Gump (book and the movie) has such a place in our psyche that any story about a rich retarded (or slow) young man will always be compared to it. The same way as any prison-break story will always be compared to Count of Monte Cristo (be it Shawshank Redemption or Prisoner of Birth).

So, Lottery is a story of Perry L Crandall (where L stands for 'Lucky'), our simpleton hero and narrator of the story, who stays with his old grandma, lives in American North West in a coastal town, works for a fishing supplies store and loves a salesgirl from a local convenience store. He wins a lottery a few days after his grandma passes away. How his life and the life people around him changes after him striking it rich. And how his friends and his dead grandma help him survive his greedy vultures of cousins.

Everything said, its a wonderful - feel-good underdog story. You connect with Perry from the first page, he is your underdog hero and you root for him every time he faces another of his blood sucking cousin. Like any other underdog story - characters here are very one dimensional - either good (like Perry, his grand ma, his employer and his friends) or bad (like his cousins and his own mother).

Its not a page-turner thriller but a nice and easy read. I will give it a 4 out of 5 stars!!
