Thumbs down Christian Missionaries Attempt A Rich Harvest, Using Tsunami Excuse

Conversion attempts in the time of grief

Shobha Warrier in Nagapattinam | January 24, 2005 15:45 IST
Last Updated: January 24, 2005 16:17 IST

When I entered one of the rows of temporary shelters built for tsunami victims in Pattancherry village in Nagapattinam, I witnessed a minor scuffle in a corner.

Some inmates had surrounded a Christian priest and two nuns, and a war of words was going on.

"We are Hindus and we want to live as Hindus. Why do you want to convert us?" some young men shouted at the missionaries.

The priest said, "We are not here to convert people. We were only offering prayers for your peace of mind."

But flashing some pamphlets distributed among them by the three, the inmates snorted, "What does this mean?"

The priest had no answer.

"Why do you enter our houses and pray?," they asked. "Your nuns do this when our women are alone at home. We know how to pray."

The young men were extremely furious. The priest was unruffled. But the nuns were shaken by the sudden surge of animosity from the muscular men.

The scuffle went on till the three were forced to leave the place.

Day two:

As I was visiting the areas close to the sea that were badly affected by the tsunami waves, I saw another angry scene outside another temple in another village.

Police jeeps were seen parked outside the temple in Samandapettai. So was a van.

Villagers were complaining to the police about a missionary group to which the van belonged.

They said the group had taken away to another place their belongings and the relief they had got from nongovernmental organisations and the government, which they had kept inside the temple, because they refused to listen to its missionaries.

"They want to try their luck at some other place. Since we resisted, they took away our things. We won't allow this to happen," they said. "Why don't you arrest all of them?" the villagers asked the police.

The villagers' torrent of angry words continued. "We have lost everything to the sea. They said they would help us if we followed their religion. What logic is this? Are they here to help us or change our religion?" The police couldn't cool their tempers.

The group said it did not take away the belongings of the villagers and insisted that the contents inside the van belonged to it.

That evening, some villagers came with the news that the police had arrested the priest they had confronted the previous day. Apparently some angry villagers had gheraoed him, and forced the police to arrest him.

"He shouldn't be doing this when we are grieving, when we are suffering. Everything has its time and place," a villager said.

When I wanted to talk to the panchayat president and locals of the Karakkalmedu village at Karaikkal, they called me inside the village temple. That was where they met outsiders. The temple has become the centre of activity in the village.

Before we started talking, one of them opened the door to the sanctum sanctorum and pointed to a mark left by the strong tsunami waves. They told me that water stopped at the feet of their deity and then receded. "We might have suffered, but our Goddess saved us."

This belief had taken the villagers all the more closer to their deity.

"That is why it hurts us when others come and tell us that it was because of our God and our belief that we suffered. We won't let anyone exploit us when we are down," the panchayat members asserted.

Say Hallelujah!

I think Hinduism now needs a 'conversion' process/ceremony. Till date Hinduism is a way of life and there is no written down 'conversion' process. I think we need to invent one for sake of warding off other 'conversion' processes

There was some Christian thug from the US by the name of Benny Hinn who came down for a mass harvest for the vatican. He was of course opposed tooth and nail by the BJP in Karnataka. Even BJP general secratery Ananth Kumar was arrested. There were stone throwing incidents etc. But even so Hon. Shri.Dharam Singh (CM Karnataka) and Shri.Chaggan Bhujbal (of the Telgi fame) were present at the venue. Benny Hinn pulled off his regular stunts of curing people of all diseases etc. I'm sure a few of those guys present there would have been converted. Most present there were those Harijans of TN and Kerala who were already converted.

Hinn healing: The plot thickens

BANGALORE: For three days now, the city has groaned under the weight of the Benny Hinn show. Many of the apparently healed have justified the need for the mega event despite the multitude of problems. But the jury is still out on whether Hinn is a fraud or someone with connections to the Lord.

Questions on people's minds regarding Hinn's healing methods and utterances indicate that all may not have been above board. Sample these: Why were only those cured allowed on stage? Colonel Samuel (retd) suffers from immobility of the right side of his body. Hoping for a miracle, he, with wife in tow, managed to shuffle up to the stage. Only to be jostled away by an organiser, who said: "Only if you are healed can you go on stage. If you're not healed by Jesus, your time has not come." Are they really cured forever? Why are there no doctors from city hospitals, but mostly from Hinn's ministry? What actually is the miracle? What is his modus operandi?

Neither Hinn nor his stooges have any answer except a tepid one, faith. One question that will probably never be answered is how many of the healed will wake up one of these mornings, after Hinn has left for greener pastures, feeling unhealed? Like all faith healers, Benny Hinn Inc. is unwilling to put the healing claims to scientific scrutiny.

Pre- and post-healing medical records can tell the truth, but nobody is volunteering this information; neither are they keeping a count of those healed. Responding to TOI's query on some people rushing to the stage for a cure, Hinn said: "This is psychosomatic healing wherein the mind is capable of enabling the body to think itself healed. Even before I come on stage, there have been cases where people have been healed; the music, prayers and atmosphere add to it."

Talking Hinn - Sonia's Boy!

'Hallelujah! None of you will leave this place sick'
SMITHA RAO & HEMALI CHHAPIA

TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ MONDAY, JANUARY 24, 2005 11:25:55 PM ]

BANGALORE: It's 9.30 pm at Jakkur airstrip and US pastor Benny Hinn's "healing" session was in progress. The entire ground was reverberating with cries of "rise and heal".

After a dozen or so testimonies of "cures", a man jumped over the fence to reach the stage. He explained his "ailment" to the volunteers. "Pastor, this man here has not walked for years. But today, a wonderful miracle has happened to him. He can walk, run, jump... in fact, he jumped over the fence," said an American volunteer whose job is to recount the health problems and the apparent miracles.

"Hallelujah! Shall we have a huge round of applause for this glorious feat of the Lord? I told you, none of you will leave this place sick," pastor Hinn replied.

The "cured" man jumped and ran about. Hinn gave him a slight nudge on the chin. But the man did not collapse, unlike many others who did after they "felt" an electric current pass.

Now the inside story: This "healed" man, P Raj (name changed), was a decoy planted by The Times of India to find out how Hinn's medical team separates the wheat from the chaff. Raj, actually in fine health, came to the meet pretending to have a pronounced limp, and was put in the "sick" enclosure. As the "healing" session began, this man started screaming that he was cured. Like him, thousands of people claimed a cure and jostled to get onstage.

Doctors in Hinn's team explained to TOI that they could make out the "really cured" from those who were not. "We check them meticulously. We cannot explain these miracles, but they are happening. We can make out who has been cured and we send only those persons onstage," explained one doctor. Raj was certified "cured". For the record, however, Raj had no malady.

Hinduism gets attacked from all sides, then we have enemies of Hinduism like Laloo and gang who harp on caste distinctions, further dividing Hindus and then we have these foreign religious mercenaries out to screw Hinduism.

The Crusades which were done in the very old times in Europe are still being done with a different face and pace in rural and tribal parts of India. Thats what is worrisome. When you take advantage of a tragedy and try to convert people, thats what is wrong.

Thumbs down

The Italian ***** could be subtly helping these guys to spread their faith. I sure hope that there is a backlash. This cannot continue too long. It's a war against Hinduism by the secular sultans and crusaders.

Do It Anyway..... ---- Written By Mother Teresa

People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered; Forgive
them
anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; Be
kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true
enemies; Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; Be honest and frank
anyway.

What you spend years building, someone could destroy it overnight;
Build
anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous; Be happy
anyway.
The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; Do good
anyway.

Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough; Give the
world the best you've got anyway.

You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God; It was never
between you and them anyway.

Sir Viking,

If the poor people think that with a little bit of money they are going to be better off than they were previously and if someone is ready to give them education, better health care fa then atleast let them live! Any way in the present day there is no such thing as humanity!is there? i seriously doubt.

what role is religion playing anyway, other than dividing people. better if there were no religion in the first place, but when religion(christianity) is there and is giving people something rather than them living in abject poverty it is better that way. look at communal riots-in india im referring to., i am not bothered about the outside world, they are always between hindus and muslims, christians have always been peace loving and forgiving whenever they have been attacked here. I think we have to learn something from them from this.

If u don't believe, look at the case of Kerala and the Northeastern states, how better off they are than the rest of the country.have they lost their culture?you don't lose your culture by converting to another religion. rather what i have observed is that they have adopted some of our culture into their rituals I have Muslim and Christian friends too.Only thing that is required is to live and let live which is practised by Christianity.

In the end its all about sharing, loving and caring for our brothers and sisters.Forget about foreigners and our boastfulness to teach them lessons. We need to change ourselves first. Then only can we make a difference.

Yours humbly,
konath
