Thanks.

1. This year it was 4th October ... how does he know the day next year? This is the day when he prepares food ... food, his ancestors or parents were fond of ... leave a handful out for the birds to feed on ... correct? His friend from Banaras Uni suggested fresh water in clean container as well ...

2. River is the problem, he said ... sea or huge pond semsems no? Til+spade-of-grass+recall-fond-memories+homage ... this doesn't have to be once a year? ... he can when ever he feels like it? ... correct?

3. In one of the posts you mentioned amavasya ... comes once a month, I think. Can he perform one of above two or both on that amavasya day?

4. Wife can't accompany him when he is walking to the pond or sea? A website (send money by westin unon) said women are forbidden ... men/sons alone can. What are your thoughts on this?

I don't yet have next year panchang yet available to tell exact date but by rough calc it there is one data missing that can make this off by a full one day should be either 23nd(tue) thithi per my calc sets in at 11:13:31 pm and ends at 4:20 pm 24th all rough calc ok. Panchang hota to exact bata deta..hell I won't need to calc it would be mentioned there. I am leaning more towards later but cannot confirm.
--edit more accurate now.

2. River is the problem, he said ... sea or huge pond semsems no? Til+spade-of-grass+recall-fond-memories+homage ... this doesn't have to be once a year? ... he can when ever he feels like it? ... correct?

Basically a river because it supposedly leads to the SEA.. so if sea is nearer it is even better.

3. In one of the posts you mentioned amavasya ... comes once a month, I think. Can he perform one of above two or both on that amavasya day?

Yes but mahalay amavasya is considered auspicious but there is NO rule that it HAS TO BE on that day.

4. Wife can't accompany him when he is walking to the pond or sea? A website (send money by westin unon) said women are forbidden ... men/sons alone can. What are your thoughts on this?

She can accompany him to the beach but NOT Participate in the ritual and not touch him if it is that time of the month from the time he took shower til he has completed the ritual.

Ye moon bhi naa bahut gandu hai.. neither 23rd nor 24th making the calc iffy.. saala ek date decide nai kar saktaa? Anyways if mahalaya has to be done it has to be 24th except between 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm which wii be rahu kala for IST and 12:47 pm - 2:17 pm EST

Re: SHRAD - to honor ancestors and departed elders

Tanteshwarji.. a very simple rule of thumb.. if you know one amavasya day.. say jan 1st (which it will be in 2014) add 30 days to it and see what you get.. Mahalay will usually be in the end of sep or beging to mid oct.. the amavasya falling there abouts and if one falls early nov in rare cases that and you can guess that by earlier festival dates.. did it come earlier? chances are then in that solar period, mahalya will be earlier so going by that calc a simple perl script or sql code will give you the dates.

Koi rocket science nahi hai ye sab. Haan thithi and exact onset gets a little skewed because of the idiocy of sidereal time and the earth's revolution time iffyness.. 365 days 12.5 hours being the calc.. to udhar thoda gadbad jhaala ho jaata hai.

Re: SHRAD - to honor ancestors and departed elders

So finish it by noon 24th sep 2014 and that should give plenty of margin. If you can give lat. long and or time zone I can try to give the timing for that.
