Re: Amitabh receives France's top civilian award

just wondering . Why did France give a civilian award to Amitabh , even though he is not a citizen, or more not even living in that country.

Is Bollywood films such a craze in France?

Re: Amitabh receives France's top civilian award

i know back in the Raj kapoors era, hindi flims had a major market in Europe. Not sure of the situation now. Still makes no sence to give AB the awad of top citizen.

Re: Amitabh receives France's top civilian award

Its not that big a deal really ... French embassy's all over the world bestow this honor upon locals every year and often. Amitabh is a fine Indian except for his claiming bankrupt status while owning properties worth billions.

methinks it is political. France is trying to make belated inroads into India after US and UK. France and Germany were concentrating on China so far.

Big B is the 4th Indian to get such award. the earlier 3 were Satyajit Ray, R K Pachauri and Ravi Shankar. SR and RS are the hi culture ones you can expect French to admire. one would expect them to give such honour to Om Puri or Naseerudinn Shah (Om Puri has actually got some british honours)

One more question is nagging me. Satyajit Ray got the award from their President Mitterand directly whereas big b got it from the French Ambassador. Why? are there different categories of this 'Top Honour'
