Drumstick

Today one of my colleague brought drumstick+potatoes bhaji I had few pieces and it tasted nice.He could not give me the recipe but would give it tommorow from his wife.
Till now I was under the impression that drumsticks are to be added only in sambhar and daal.

So if you have any drumstick recipes please post it here.Knowing health benifits of this vegetable would also be informative. So ladies please share your gyaan.

Premi anna search nahi kiya, tired of this searching thing so if you find this thread as a duplicate request please excuse me from your

Re: Drumstick

You will need:

Drumsticks: 2, chopped in 5 inch pieces
Potatoes: 2, chopped thinly in the same length as drumsticks
Onion: 1, chopped fine, length wise
Tomato: 1, chopped length wise
Green chilies: 2, slit
Oil: 2 tbsp
Salt: according to taste
Haldi: a pinch
Coriander powder: 1 tbsp
Cilantro: handful, chopped

For tadka:
Mustard seeds: 1 tsp
Urad dal: 1 tsp
Channa dal: 1 tsp
Curry leaves: 1 string

Method:
  • Heat oil in a kadai and everything under 'for tadka' in the same order.
  • Now add green chilies followed by onions and fry the onions until they are translucent.
  • Now add haldi and salt followed by drumsticks and potato.
  • sprinkle a little water, cover and cook. Stir occasionally.
  • When veggies are almost cooked, add tomato pieces and cover and cook until tomatoes are soft.
  • Stir in coriander powder and check the taste for salt. You can also add red chili powder if you like your subzi spicy.
  • Now stir in coriander leaves and switch off.
This will easily serve 3 people. You can also add bringal/egg plant to this along with potatoes.

Edit: we also make vada with drumsticks.

No Sane, we first chop the drumsticks and steam them until its cooked through. Then we separate the pulp with a spoon from its shell, add a few spices to it along with a little rice flour and deep fry just like vada. Do you know, we even make poriyal (not sure what to call this in Hindi) with drumstick leaves?

Know about drumstick leaves... cooked with chana dal it becomes delicious. But steaming and separating pulp from shell/fibres seem like a lot of work

It certainly is a lot of work but worth the effort though. Tastes yum....

@ Swami, you were asking about benefits right, here are a couple I know of. You can pass them along if anyone needs this.

1. Drumsticks increase sperm count it seems; apparently its better than the medication in the initial stages. People having issues with motility are often advised to consume this in large quantities.

2. Pregnant women are advised to eat this too; apparently it will help in easy delivery, helps in abundant supply of milk for baby and aids in preventing any issues with lactation post delivery.
