Any dog owners here?

Just got a 7 month old rescue pup, a crossbreed between Great Pyrenees and Mountain Cur.
I had a few questions...I am so freaked out.

I don't have a dog and I hate dogs, the filth created by dogs and their owners in neighborhoods, the nauseating liberal love dogs are showered with. America's GDP could be a percent higher if it not for dogs.

chutiya amrus even call them their babies and celebrate b'days .. one coworker said I became a grandad today, I was like congrats, is it your son's or daughter's.. bugger does.. no it's my dogs.

You are entitled to your opinion but you probably did not grow up with a pet at home so its difficult for folks like you to understand the affection people shower on their dogs/cats or any other pets. There is nothing nauseating about it at all. They become a part of your family and are treated the same way.

I started a thread similarly a while back.
Prominent posts from that. BTW, our update is the kid who was asking for a dog is found allergic to dogs and cats. He has been asking for a snake since then

Goras have because they do not have as much social life/obligations like us desis. Ye weekend shaadi pe (out of town) jao, India jao etc...Look for dog sitting places etc is additional.

Saale mere employee ko uski maa vacation pe gayi to I had to let him go for couple of hours in the middle of the shift to let the dog "out".

2 examples.. all real from my stay in USA.

1. head of dept of design in an engineering company, acts like her dogs to show to colleagues every Monday morning.. it's quite a sight watching her imitate her dogs.. fat lady climbing a chair like a dog and jumping off desk. I joined as an intern and saw this on my 1st day in 2006.

2. Relatives in US - talked about their dogs non-stop every time I visit.. 2 hours tea and snacks.. all we discussed was their dogs.. I'm like pencho I'm worse than their dogs.

All the dog poo on driveway and sidewalk.. all mofos say we always pick up after our dogs.. I'm like only if somebody's watching.. and what if loose motion?

Now you know why it's nauseating.

The last paragraph. That is the one thing that is holding
Me from keeping a dog. And also safety concerns. You don't know when they get angry and bite someone.

If we socialize with fellow pet (dog) owners, the discussion almost invariably does veer towards our four legged friends but I usually don't bore people who don't have pets with kutta tales. I have 2 children so there is a plenty to talk about other topics .. when folks visit us and some of them are morbidly scared of dogs, he is kept a safe distance away in the garage and understandably so because the dude is a 90 pounder (despite being well trained and extremely gentle)

Yes, I have noticed that some folks do go overboard (like your head of design) probably but oh well, there are all kind of folks in this world. Don't let that make you think that all dog owners behave the same way

Regarding potty training, I can probably count 2-3 instances where some accident might have happened inside the house when my dog was a puppy. And no, all dogs don't poop/pee on driveway and sidewalks. Once trained, dogs have their spots usually in bushes or places where they happen to do scent marking for other canine companions from the neighborhood.

Picking up after your dog is a habit which initially might be a bit disgusting but it slowly becomes a part of one's daily routine. There are leashes available with potty bag dispensers attached to them so you are never caught unawares. In most subdivisions there are pet waste eliminator stations where we can dispose off the bags.

Usually diarrhea is not very common if you have a healthy dog and monitor his diet but if it does happen, you usually hose it down and clean the area with a disinfectant later or if its outdoors, cover the area with some loose soil and then scoop it up in a bag (TMI, I know ).. You feed your dog some rice mixed with unsalted chicken broth/or cooked pumpkin puree and it works as a probiotic and settles down their tummy.

unfortunate instances do happen despite all the precautions sometimes as is the case with anything in life. If you are fond of dogs, don't let that stop you from getting one as a pet. you wont regret it .

yes, there are all kinds of people.. Some have no dogs and some have like 10 .. but doesn't one get locked into sitting at home all the time? Or you gotta have somebody take care of your dog/s. You can't take them to India, don't they generally die during long air travel?

Imagine not sleeping at night because your dog is shit scared of thunderstorms, or just scratching at your door.. screws up all your furniture, carpet, dog fleas, etc and smelly home to boot.

The extra work one has to do is too much.. 4 inch snow outside so you work from home, so no snow shoveling, but you will have to move your ass at 6am.. cause of your furbabies.

yeah its a lot of work but all worth it IMHO. Dog boarding usually costs $40 - $60 or above depending on the activities you sign up for/per day so yes, it is a cost when you are traveling out of town. yes they do damage and chew on furniture when they are not trained but its a temporary hazard.

Like I said its not for everybody. You have to truly/genuinely/wholeheartedly love animals to own a pet and it can be quite overwhelming on some days but its all worth it in my case.

Edit/Add: For a married couple, its very important that your spouse is fond of dogs as well because you cannot count on kids to take care of the animal. They usually want to cuddle up and play with the cute furball but when it comes to grunt work, its usually left to the parents

Re: Any dog owners here?

My kids have been asking / begging for a dog. This is what I tell them.

"You know, your mom and I really wanted a dog a long time ago. We discussed it, and decided to have kids instead. We can get a dog as long as we can put one of you two in foster care!" (i have 2 kids).
