Re: If you haven't done your taxes yet

I have used turboxtax online two times before - http://turbotax.intuit.com/

I go to the site, fill in whatever is there in my tax return form, it calculates my return, I take a print out and snail mail it to IRS.

Then one day I get a post with my check!

Now a question.

I have now come to US on 2-Jan-2007, so I won't be filing any tax return for 2006, right??

Sane Less,

Free software doesn't mean anything. It's better to prepare returns online, than downloading the software.
Even though software is free, filing is not. You will still need to pay to file. I am not sure if you can 'print' the form, so you can mail it to file for free. Most softwares do not allow you to print, though.

Though I haven't completed my taxes yet, this download promises a free filing (both federal and state). I have used TaxAct before and even that promises a free federal filing. I am not comfortable using something just online... don't know whether an online return allows you to save a local copy or not, that you can open and check whenever you feel like. I have used TaxAct throughout the last couple of years and not just for taxes. The software is handy to look up some things... kids' SSN... any numbers...

Have been using TaxAct since last two years, and was able to print it out and snail mail it to IRS for a free filing. I believe TaxCut also allows you to print out your returns, along with instructions of how to arrange your papers before mailing them...

Also, many states offer free state tax filing online; California is one of them.
