Do you prefer a female doctor over male?

How do you select your family doctor?

Do you prefer to visit:

- a female doctor, or
- male doctor,
- Indian (if outside India),
- someone who speaks your language,
- someone your age group,
- one with good references or
- what else?

What is the advantage?

Re: Do you prefer a female doctor over male?

I dont have any preference in the gender of the doctor. I look for how experienced the doctor is and how well he is known or regarded by others.

Also I look for qualities like how well he explains to me what is happening to me and why I am being asked to take a certain medication, etc. If a doctor just says 'no you need to take this' and does not explain any other details, I refuse to accept him as my doctor.

In the US, I did not go seeking a desi doctor as such. I had a doctor but he used to be more like 'Ok Mr. Katkar, you need to do this.' I ask why? and he would say 'Its a lot of medical science and you may not understand it all'. So I stopped visiting him.

I dont want a complete lecture about medicine and physiology but I do want a simple explanation.

In India I have found that many doctors will prescribe you multiple medications and not explain why! Once my family doctor, on a trip back home, prescribed a lot of pills for my fever. I asked him why do I need this acidity pill! He said that the Ibuprofen will cause acidity so you better take it along with Ibuprofen. Now come on! If I feel the acidity I will take it then. I dont want to just take a lot of medication as a 'pre-emptive strike'. My doctor here in the US has prescribed me a strong painkiller once but just said that I might get some stomach acidity or heartburn, but I should just chew on Tums if it occurs. And this acidity would because of strong reaction of the painkiller with your stomach and digestive tract.

Thats the difference. Do tell me why and what of the prescriptions. Dont just ask me to swallow pills without explanation. Atleast I dont like to blindly swallow pills without some sort of explanation.

One who speaks my language, certainly. Gender hardly makes any difference, of course. Qualifications would, but considering that my first visits are always to my GP, his references matter, if I need to take to a specialist.

I have an Indian doctor in the US. We speak English though.

Gender could make a difference to women patients I guess.

I had two male doctors and one female family doctor in three different towns in India. There are a few doctors in my family so at least in my hometown if I go to any doctor they don't charge me any fees.

Yes, many doctors explain, but some of them are irritated if you ask details. Then it is like doctor tum ho ki main hoon?
