Angry Navy deal with Myanmar hits UK hurdle

UK threatens Indian Navy with future sanctions!

Navy deal with Myanmar hits UK hurdle

January 25, 2006 at 0104 hours IST

NEW DELHI, JANUARY 24: The UK has been critical of India’s recent overtures to Myanmar’s military dispensation, but now it has warned New Delhi against the proposed sale by the Navy of a British-made BN-2 Islander aircraft to Yangon.
Ahead of Navy Chief Admiral Arun Prakash’s Myanmar visit from January 19-22, the British High Commission wrote a letter to the External Affairs Ministry, which was then forwarded to the Defence Ministry and the Navy.

The Navy is now worried that the UK’s protest could upset ongoing deals with that country, including the supply of helicopter spares and the cleared sale of 10 second-hand Royal Navy Sea Harriers to replenish the Goa-based fleet.

South Block sources told The Indian Express that the letter hinted at future hitches in military sales if the Islander aircraft sale to Yangon went through. The Navy finds this bizarre since there was no resale clause in the contract signed with British aviation firm Britten-Norman two decades ago. Yangon has expressed interests in using the aircraft for maritime surveillance and aerial ambulance missions.

Snags in military business with London are new to the Navy. When its fleet of Sea King anti-submarine helicopters were sent to the UK for an upgrade in the mid ’90s, they were virtually confiscated because of post-Pokhran US sanctions.

Therefore, the new tension has compelled the Navy to go low key on the Navy’s Chief’s visit. During the visit, the Myanmar government proposed the creation of permanent deputation posts for the Navy in Myanmar to train the country’s sailors and officers in weapons and sensors, engineering and offshore operations. The country has also invited Indian officers to visit and inspect its Chinese-built ports soon.

Re: Navy deal with Myanmar hits UK hurdle

Why does India want to bed the military regime of Burma? Why go after a few peanuts in terms of monetary gain with Burma by selling them such things? And if we want to sell them anything why not our hugely successful Arjun tank?

Re: Navy deal with Myanmar hits UK hurdle

The Bodos and Ulfa have a safe santuary in that lousy Bangladesh already.Good relations with Burma will help us in this regard(no new sanctuary).
And then,if we can 'cultivate' s-o-bs like the pukis, what's wrong with the Burmese?
