A question to SEO gurus on EC
Hello, I have a question... might sound dumb, but I couldnt find any conclusive answers....
Suppose I have a website in which all pages have a .asp extension something like http://www.dontfuckme.com/available.asp This page comes on top when searched on the relevant keywords. Now we have rebuilt the site using php so the new page is http://www.dontfuckme.com/available.php If we keep the names of pages same, will the change of extension from .asp to .php affect our ranking?

yes, because the ranking of the .asp page is due to the backlinks associated with that page; the new page will not have the same quantity and quality of backlinks, so it is most likely that the new page will lose the rankings; the impact will not be instant though ... the ranking of the page will get affected after a few weeks or may be after some months... but it is most likely to get affected and badly ...

Re: A question to SEO gurus on EC
This is not my strongest area, but my understanding is that you should do a 301 redirect from .asp to .php to maintain link equity. That's a way to tell search engines that old page no longer exists, but there is an equivalent new page located at a new url.
Something like: Code:
RedirectMatch 301 (.*)\.asp$ http://www.dontfuckme,com$1.php

If you let your programmers get on Echarcha then they can ask the questions too.

Put in a change request and mark it as non-emergency (Severity 4 or 5). The programmers will get to it when they get to it.
