So 1.Bd5+Kf8 means - White Bishop moves to d5 putting check on Black's king and in response Black's king moves to f8.
Hope that makes it clear.
Thanks.

But in column D, the white bishop is in danger from the black queen?

I forgot to explain that - if Black q leaves 7th rank (for taking White B for example) - Black is in huge soup - White's Q,rook and bishop are going to make life miserable for black king.

How come? I've been racking my head about it but can't see any harm.

So suppose you are white and play Bd5, and black moves Qd5 (is that right? Queen kills the bishop). What next?

Re: Chess Puzzles

Starting a series of 75 Chess Problems by John Thursby ... the book is quite old (1883) ...

Problem 1: White to mate in two moves (and win)

Code:
FEN: 8/N2b2B1/1P5Q/2pk2K1/N7/3p4/n2P4/4R3
You can load this FEN code in chessup.net and try variations visually (instead of mentally )

Re: Chess Puzzles

I think the answer to this one is

(1) Re5+,

which gives this ...

which means the king can either move to d4 or c4, there is nothing much left in either scenario ... so if black king moves to Kd4, which gives

(2) Qh4# (checkmate), here is the board position after white moves its Queen for the final assault:

I hope it is checkmate (?)

Re: Chess Puzzles

Landya,if K moves to d4,then your calculation is correct - but if K moves to c4,then it won't be mate in 2 although white will win in next couple of moves after that for sure.

NapsPai, you are right, black's Kc4 is definetly not a two-move mate possibility for white ...

any other solution that can force a mate in two?

next move white plays 1.Qxh7+ Kf8 2.Bh6+(not 2.Qxh8+Qg8 and black does not suffer further losses)Ke8 3.Qxh8+ and black's king is in center and black is down 1 minor piece.

Nf8, ... (black needs to move Queen to some place?)

Re: Chess Puzzles

Probably something like this - 1.Rxf6 gxf6 2.Qh7+Kf8 3.Nxe6+ Rxe6(forced - otherwise black q is gone.Cannot take by pawn either since it is pinned to black q) 4.Rxe6 Now black cannot take rook since pawn is pinned to black q.And cannot avoid checkmate next move by white q on h8.
