Talking Foolish Minister : S.M Krishna

Krishna reads out wrong speech at UN!

February 12, 2011 19:58 IST

External Affairs Minister S M Krishna [ Images ] was caught in a public gaffe when he inadvertently read out the speech of the Portuguese minister at a United Nations Security Council meeting at the United Nations, but rectified the error after an Indian official drew his attention to the mistake.

Speaking at the United Nations Security Council at a debate on security and development on Friday, Krishna read out the wrong speech for nearly three minutes before being corrected by India's [ Images ] envoy to UN Hardeep Singh Puri.

Krishna read Portuguese Foreign Minister Luis Amado's speech, without realising his mistake, apparently because the first portion related to general issues pertaining to the UN, development and security. But a few lines did go out of place.

"On a more personal note, allow me to express my profound satisfaction regarding the happy coincidence of having two members of the Portuguese Speaking Countries, Brazil [ Images ] and Portugal, together here today," was one of them.

Krishna could have said this thinking it fit because Brazil holds the current presidency of the Security Council.

"The European Union is also responding in this manner in coordination with the United Nations," he said, before Puri intervened.

"You can start again," Puri told Krishna following the faux pas. The Portugal minister had already spoken before India.

Krishna is in New York on a two-day visit to push India's agenda for Security Council reforms.

Re: Foolish Minister : S.M Krishna

On a second thought, this is ok. Atleast, he read out later the correct one, which is much better than one ex-minister who read out all his speech in hindi. Hindi??? Who understands hindi in an international podium? If its about availability of translators (machine or men), then why need to assemble all foreign ministers and do the drama? Canít they send their speech by postal or email to UN?

So, this is not the first time, India send a foolish foreign minister to UN.

a lot of people do read their speeches in their native languages, its not just India. People are proud of their languages.
There are some diplomats and representatives at UN who dont even KNOW English let alone speak it.

when a chinese company took over Volvo, its chairman gave a media speech in chinese. Its not even a government kind of functional - its corporate that too for a company like Volvo!

There is a time and place to show off your pride of your own language and the UN convention is certainly it.

I recall Vajpayee also spoke his speech in Hindi in an UN meet.

Its a bad trend in India to speak in English when you meet anybody.. its probably in-built in Indians that English is a superior language.

Re: Foolish Minister : S.M Krishna

It's ok if a person speaks in his mother tongue; the UN are sure to have translators, at least for a major language like Hindi. But a goof-up of this sorts !!!

Why now these UN meets matter? Because india is looking for a permanent seat in security council (or isnít?). Army is doing its job, now politicians and babus need to their bit. So speak the language of those who matters, even if it was swaihali.

For promoting hindi, you have another n number of international podiums, be it some trade fairs or exhibitions, or may be in IPL.

Hindi indeed is a great language and ratan tata would also be proud of a, aa, e, ee, but I doubt if that would have helped to purchase range rover and jaguar with hindi bids and hindi speaking management team?

When speaking to media, he must have used any language that he is proud of or that suits the media.

The secretary to foreign minister would probably an IFS officer, not the kind of corporate front-desk secretary.

At the most, a transfer to antartica for that IFS officer, not stripping him/her of job.

its not now that UN matters. UN is a suitable platform to make speeches in your own language. They have translators sitting to translate these languages - unlike at trade fairs, exhibitions where you end up losing business because people dont understand hindi and there are no translators....
