Many. According to some rumors, there are 33 crore gods in hinduism... there is some reference to this in gita, not sure.
I think it's a baloney... no one knows the exact number and I won't be surprised if various texts contradict each other on the numbers. I have a theory on how they might have come up with this number.

There must be some journo from Time or Life or BBC or something ike that visiting India during British occupation days... and must've got really surprised by the no. of temples and no. of strange looking gods... and then he started inquiring around about the no.... and he realized that no one knows the real no... one day he was referred to this guru... now this new age guru was first of those spirituality monger types...

when he(guru) was asked then he also realized that he didnt know the answer to it... so he came up with this spiritual shit... that each of us is god... and India's population must be around 33 crore at that time... so he said that there were 33 crore gods.

This journo was a little low on spiritual intelligence...he went back and quoted this guru on that... and since it was a reputed magazine/paper so he was quoted again and again and even indians started writing that there are 33 crore gods in hinduism.

As for texts, there are many... hinduism is not a coded religion like abrahamic ones... so hindus dont believe in one stupid book written by some fraud messiah... hindus believe in a ton of inscrutable, hard-to-interpret texts... but not even a handful of them have read any of that... There are like 4 veds, 18 purans, some 8 or 9 upnishads, many smritis etc.

The most popular texts to be found in an average north indian hindu family's poojaghar(worship place) is Ramcharitmanas and Srimadbhagwatgita... incidentally, both of them have no religious importance... they are extract and reinterpretation of epics.

Just like no one knows exactly how many human beings there are on earth... or ants... or butterflies... just like that there is no exact count of hindu gods too. Why because there are male gods and there are female gods... and then there is reproduction.

Also, like some species become extinct... especially when there is only one of that species alive... some gods in other regions of earth, who were claimed to be only one, have become extinct now... or will become soon

I think it's a balone.
did they count it properly ...i suspect.
they were only accurate up-till they included sachin god.
goddess sonia and god ysr had not been included.
might be 33 crore + 3 is correct count.

Re: How many Gods Hindus have.

God is one.

But i think three main gods of Hindus
  • Brahma - The creator
  • Vishnu - The protector
  • Siva -The destroyer
The total number crosses including all small and big gods in Hinduism is approximately 33 million.

Its true....

Re: How many Gods Hindus have.

There is only one God in Hinduism and he is called Eishwara. There are several demi-gods. You might call them angels, farishteys etc..

Now among various sects, who is this Eishwara and what are the characteristics of this Eishwara differs. There are some who believe Vishnu is Eishwara and to describe his characteristics there are stories that thy make use of. Then there are some who believe Shiva is the Eishwara, and there are stories to describe his characteristics. The list is big.

There is one unique personality on our EC... who you will see real soon.... Do I hear 'Sutras'? Bhago....

Texts ?
---- for ultimate reference - Ved
---- secondary reference - Upanishads
Then comes Purans, Ramayana, Mahabharata with Shrimad Bhagwad Gita.

Purans are human made so less reliable.

Bhago....

I dont think he is into God more than he is into spirituality . You should not fear him and let him in .

1 crore = 10 million, so number of gods in Hindu pantheon = 330 million. Ishwara is a concept followed by all but two branches of Hindu philosophy/thought namely Samkhya and Mimamsa; there are six branches of Hindu philosophy of `aastika` i.e. that believe in God which only one Vedanta that converned with rituals survives today. There are 3 other `naastika` schools Buddhism, Jainism and Charvaka of which Charvaka is extinct.

Akka, what is meaning of Naastika, does it mean, people who does not believe in supremacy of veda or the people who doesnt believe in existence of god

acc to hindu school of thought, naastik means someone who either doesnt adhere to the supremacy of veds or doesnt believe in the rebirth/karma/moksha or both. There are, like always, certain exceptions.

I think naastik means not beleving in god or gods and aastik the opposite (myself not an expert on religion or philosophy...)
