In what was a first, the traditional gol ringan (circle of warkaris) of the Sant Tukaram Palkhi was performed on the Hindustan Antibiotics (HA) ground in Pimpri on Friday noon.

The ritual was performed for the first time ever in Pimpri in the 331-year tradition of the palkhi.

Speaking to DNA, president of the Sant Tukaram Maharaj Sansthan, Shivaji More, said the Pimpri ringan was an unplanned one which had taken place because the palkhi had made an unscheduled overnight halt in Pimpri due to a double ashtami on Friday.

According to More, the Sant Tukaram palkhi participates in three official ringans, which are held at Belwandi, Indapur and Akluj en route to Pandharpur.

More explained that the ringan was formed by multiple teams of pilgrims in quick succession.

"A group of warkaris first go around singing abhangs and bhajans. They are followed by women pilgrims who run around the circle with pots of tulsi on their heads, while others go around with flags.

Finally, two horses which carry the official flag of the Dehu Devasthan (temple) go around the circle and seek the blessings of the Sant Tukaram Palkhi. A spot visit to the HA ground revealed a surcharged atmosphere with as many as 2.5 lakh warkaris thronging the ground.

The warkaris were joined by several hundred people from Pimpri who had come to witness the ringan.

Pimpri-Chinchwad mayor Yogesh Behl told mediapersons that the warkaris would be lodged in municipal schools where arrangements for drinking water and food have been made. Closed circuit television cameras (CCTVs) were installed at the ground and security was in place.

There were several television crews with their outside broadcasting (OB) vans covering the event. Devotees took advantage of the vans and clambered atop them for a view of the ringan.

The Pune traffic police had a pressing time controlling the crowd.
