Mom seriously believes her doings are normal. She doesnít have the sense to understand. She is adamant. If we try to change her she quarrels like anything.

1. Not using dustbin even when dustbin is available at home. Nor does Mom allow us to use it. Instead she puts all the dirt in two or three polythene bags. The dirt may spill outside while putting. Even without spilling the polythene bags itself look like garbage. If we try to use dustbin, Mom scolds and prohibits.

2. Not using door mat. Instead Mom uses two-three old clothes for wiping feet. It looks disgusting.

3. Putting dozen old invitation cards (received during otherís weddings and Gruhapraveshas) to cover windows despite putting curtain. If I try to remove it she tells it is to cover the transparent glass.

4. In one window instead of using curtain, Mom has put old saree and bedsheet by using clips to cover window. It looks disgusting.

5. Saving old milk packets for years to earn a negligible amount of money. Instead of hiding the bag in which it is saved, it is kept on outer side of window. It is visible directly to eyes while climbing stairs.

6. Not disposing off old cartons of soap. Mom believes that tons of cartons of soap keep away mosquitoes. If I try to throw it away, Mom scolds.

7. Keeping many objects on floor instead of creating proper space for it. Two or three items are okay. But here there are about dozen of them. Onion basket, flour sack, even empty containers having nothing but jute sack etc.

8. Saving too many of polythene covers that come with products like flour sack and keeping it strewn around the house.

9. Not throwing away old metal scrap like old stove, old worn out cot, old steel rack etc. Nor does Mom allow us to dispose them. She tells it can be repaired and re-used.

10. Saving mango seeds after consuming the pulp. Using medicine strips in addition to scrubber for washing utensils.

11. Scavenging useless items while going out for a stroll in a park. It may be things like the smooth fine stones found on sea shore or in construction sand (what is it called?), or some shapely but worn-out wooden objects etc.

I may write more in the space for subsequent posts.
Why don't you ask her instead of throwing it out in the open for people who don't know her, to answer?

Re: What is my momís problem? Hoards junk & keeps house untidy, cluttered and shabby.

Your mom probably has a mental problem - "OCD" Hoarding. Some times it becomes a serious issue, people don't even throw away trash and live in heaps of trash all around. There was a TV show on hoarders in US.. on I think that TV channel HGTV or something.

Quote:
Symptoms and Behavior
Someone who hoards may exhibit the following:
  • Inability to throw away possessions
  • Severe anxiety when attempting to discard items
  • Great difficulty categorizing or organizing possessions
  • Indecision about what to keep or where to put things
  • Distress, such as feeling overwhelmed or embarrassed by possessions
  • Suspicion of other people touching items
  • Obsessive thoughts and actions: fear of running out of an item or of needing it in the future; checking the trash for accidentally discarded objects
  • Functional impairments, including loss of living space, social isolation, family or marital discord, financial difficulties, health hazards

Reasons for Hoarding
People hoard because they believe that an item will be useful or valuable in the future. Or they feel it has sentimental value, is unique and irreplaceable, or too big a bargain to throw away. They may also consider an item a reminder that will jog their memory, thinking that without it they wonít remember an important person or event. Or because they canít decide where something belongs, itís better just to keep it.

Hoarding is a disorder that may be present on its own or as a symptom of another disorder. Those most often associated with hoarding are obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and depression.

Although less often, hoarding may be associated with an eating disorder, pica (eating non-food materials), Prader-Willi syndrome (a genetic disorder), psychosis, or dementia.
