Head Transplant

What will happen after transplant ? Head recipient will think and behave like the donor ?

Sergio Canavero is an Italian neurosurgeon and author who attracted media attention after stating, in early 2015, that he will be able to perform the first successful human head transplant by 2017. Valery Spiridonov, a 30-year-old Russian with Werdnig–Hoffmann disease (type I spinal muscular atrophy) and rapidly declining health, has volunteered to offer his head for Canavero's studies.

When they were experimenting on animals, none of them survived. Can they legally do a head transplant of a human without first having at least one successful animal transplant?

But most early transplants would be on patients who have lost all hopes and may not survive for a long time surgery or no surgery.
Obviously the donor would be a dead person, recipient critical.

I dont think the donor will be dead person. He must be about to die but alive to be able to donate. I think.

Re: Head Transplant

Head donor gets a new body? or body gets a new head?

Which one is it? Think about it. Lose-lose for both? Or Win-Win for both?

Re: Head Transplant

Heart transplants are done taking the heart of dead patients within a certain time limit. There is no exchange, same should be with head transplant,no one would want to play with two lives on the operating table.

Body gets a new head. I think its more a medical research trying to see if you can actually graft a completely new head.

Re: Head Transplant

Transplant is much complicated then we-non medical people can imagine, kidney transplant for example has so much risk of rejection, risk of infection due to immunosuppresant medicines to be taken etc. And here a surgeon is planning a whole head transplant.

Re: Head Transplant

I dont think its an expensive joke. There is a 99.99% possibility of graft vs host (i think that's what its called) rejection but I don't see how it is different from any other organ transplant. Of course its 1000 times more complicated but otherwise, how is it any different from other transplants?

While I agree that this doesnt seem like a good idea at all, considering the 0 success rate when the surgery is performed on animals, I wont go so far to call this a joke.

It would more be an entire body transplant to a head, theoretically if everything goes perfect, head will get a new body. Whatever we are, it's in our brain only, rest of the body is just various systems acting on its command consciously or subconsciously.

biggest hurdle would be spinal cord restoration, without proper functioning spinal cord, entire body below neck would be paralyzed. Nerves are very very sensitive things and even touching exposed nerves can take years to recover and I am talking about small nerves, spinal cord is mother of all nerves and since it's a complete body transplant, its obvious that spinal cord would be in severed state, how to attach it to brain would be something I can't comprehend. I have n experience in this, But if we ignore rejection, making a working brain spinal cord connection would be most difficult part IMO.

This one line popped out as I glanced at your long post. I don't think I or many echans will agree with you. I believe the ever most genius to ever grace this forum in the ethereal world is Prajkhaptani pai. Dovadockhan pai reaches nowhere even to the feet of Prakajatapi pai.
