Should Narcotic Drugs be legalised

I was watching an interesting debate about legalisation of narcotic drugs. The panel consisted of some medicine Marijuana supporting professor and some other ex law enforcement guy. The points made by each were compelling to say and the debate ended in a draw. Here are the salient points though

Supporting legalisation of Drugs
* Most of Cocaine/Heroin sold in US have a profit margin of 100000%.(yes one hundred thousand percent) Generally a kilo of top quality heroin takes about $1000 to produce, yet is sold in the streets for equivalent of $1 Million a kilo. Most of the balance money is used to finance the risk involved in the whole operation. The government can get a big pie of this money if this is legalised.

* Most of the drug related deaths are due to overdose and adultration of drugs by peddlers to make a quick buck. This will dry up if drugs are legalised. You dont hear of alcohol overdose or adultrated alcohol in the market.

* The government can't take the moral high ground of not allowing sales of addictive and harmful products. It openly allows sale of tobacco and liquor(with some restrictions).

* About 80% of gang violence in inner cities are drug related, most of them will vanish if narcotic drugs are legalised. Gangs dont fight over alcohol or Tobacco. A lot of organised crime syndicates also will go out of business. In the 20 and 30s Al Capone and his gang existed because of prohibition. The same can be said about today's drug czars.

* The Government can make a lot of money by imposing sin tax on Narcotics, just like it taxes alcohol and Tobacco heavily.

* As it is we have are at the losing end of the fight against drugs. Drugs are freely available to anyone who wants and is ready to pay the price.

Opposition to legalisation of drugs

* As such lot of people don't do drugs because of it being illegal. Legalising it will lead to skyrocketting of addicts

* Last year there were 1 million DUI arrests in whole of US. Again this number will skyrocket if drugs are legalised.

* Most of the child abuse cases in US happen because the abuser was intoxicated. Increased availability of drugs will lead to a generation of abused and tortured children.

* Ciggarette companies and alcohol companies have made smoking and drinking a fashion statement. If they are legally allowed to peddle narcotics, they will do the same for snorting cocaine or injection heroin.

What do you guys think. Which one makes more sense. I find it hard to decide, since both arguments have sound logic.

well...according to me,drugs should NOT be legalized.

and the point that makes most sense is this 1:

* Ciggarette companies and alcohol companies have made smoking and drinking a fashion statement. If they are legally allowed to peddle narcotics, they will do the same for snorting cocaine or injection heroin.

teenagers get easily impressed by ads and crap...rememer those dayz when arnold was flashed every now and then on tha TV screen puffing away lookin cool and stuff?

also,as we know, some drugs increase metabolism and r used by body builders and well people like fardeen to keep fresh

so there will be a creativity burst in the Ad mad world and they will leave no stone unturned as far as mixing glamor with drugs goes.

and imagine kids doin drugs..so what if tha drugs wont be unadulterated and stuff?addiction is tha main point here.

drugs will be easily and legally available and as long as theres cash in hand, people r bound to buyt them again and again...and so what if cash dries up?addiction will force them to steal, kill, rape et al to get money

NOPES.drugs shoudnt be legalized.
