Is the very notion of childhood obsolete?

As the millennium approaches, is the very notion of childhood obsolete?

Who, after all, really has the time in our fast-paced culture to let
children be children?

The idea that children are green young shoots, to be lovingly tended,
shielded from social storms and financial droughts, and encouraged to take
their own sweet time to bud and bloom ... isn't that an outdated model for
the Information Age?

Why can't we treat them, instead, as small, programmable machines? Don't
they come equipped, as a top federal science official has suggested, with
"necktop computers?" Couldn't the speed and economic efficiency of their
learning and growth be improved by any number of technical improvements --
plugging them into new electronic technologies, for example, or
prescribing the right drugs to relieve the asthma, depression,
hyperactivity, violence, and other signs of stress from which they are
increasingly suffering? Children must adjust to adults' schedules and
priorities, right, not vice versa?

the pressures of modern life are such that children are forced to grow up almost as soon as they can walk.

in the west, with both parents working full time, children have to fit into the adults schedule. it is almost as if we want them to grow up fast so that we can get on with our own lives.

this is the sad truth about society today.
